What is it?

I just got back from the junkyard and found an interesting part. It is something that the speedometer cable went into and came out of with 2 wires coming out the side. I found it on a factory looking bracket with 2 screws holding it to the left inner fender on the front clip of a 71 pickup. It carrys the Ford part number D0AF-9E721- A. The A is painted on. It appears to be a signal generator for a cruise control but I have never seen a cruise on these older pickups. Any ideas?

Its a speed sensor for the emissions control on the F100's. Its part of the system that allows the vacuum advance to work only above 30 or so mph.

Re: What is it?

Your part number definitely fits the description of a cruise control box.
D0 - is 1970 part number
A - Is Galaxie and/or general parts
F - is electronics division
9E721 - Accelerator and choke control rods parts sequence
A - Don't know
Part numbers 9700 - 9900 are accelerator and choke rod parts. Now I am assuming your part number 9E721 is actually 9721, with the E referring to a revision, sequence, or division indicator of some kind; I really don't know.
Hope this helps!

The same sensor was used for cruise controls too.

I think it was kind of the prototype of todays "hybrid" cars that run on electricity/engine combinations. The little sensor is actually an electric motor that "drove" the speedometer cable, which backfed through the transmission and powered the vehicle. But I could be wrong...

BB, how did it interface with the vacuum? Was there some sort of electric valve on the vac. line? Most of my 67-72 oickups have been F-250s and I am not familiar with this system, I had a 72 F-100 but I am pretty sure it never had this apparatus. It did have the evaporative cannister on the right frame rail.

Moonley, I could give you a smokin deal on this prototype hybrid device. Thanks for the chuckle.

This system was used only in '70, '71. Thinking about it more, I don't remember seeing it in trucks, just the car line so I might be wrong on this (falling on sword). Do you remember seeing a black box? Banjopicker66 may be right and you had a dealer option cruise control. Sorry about that.

My 72 F100 had a similar setup for aftermarket cruise control. Speedo cable in - speedo cable out and had 6 wires...also had a clip on unit on the turn signal arm to set cruise, etc. It also had a vacum line that went to a diaphram gizmo mounted on the firewall that had a chain to the carb accel. linkage. Truck had also been setup for ptopane. Previous owner sold the tank....I removed all of the non working cruise and propane stuff shortly after I got the truck.

Has anyone every seen a dealer installed or over the counter cruise control on a 71 pickup that was from Ford or used Ford part numbers?
