I own a unusually clean 91 F150 Lariat super cab w/90,000 mi that has been pretty much pampered since new,my Father was the first owner.Never had any maintenance problems before this. Never even pulled a trailer, and actually over maintained ! Kind of irritated here as I entered a "wear/wear out cycle" about 8 months' ago beginning with the electric fuel pump tank return confusion thing, next week alternator regulator failure, next week thereafter power steering pump failure (seal). Believe it or not I got a month reprieve before the oil leak began. You know the infamous 1 piece oil pan gasket pushout at rear...replaced with traditional 4 piece set. LOL got a week and then the torque converter lockup function began shuddering and slipping at low rpm's -UGH!!! I even got "duped" into trying the cure all additives by my trans parts guy...
Well all transmission electric and hydraulic circuits are ok,per 91 Fo Mo Co service pubs so down comes the transmission. After lengthy research I understand these E40D transmissions are/have chronic problems with failures common at low miles. These transmissions are not cheap to repair($1800-$2200) How many of you folks have had E40D problems? Any comments or experiences?
I suppose I am angry over all these failures in light of the top notch OVER-maintenance this truck has recieved (I am a hvy equpt/diesel mechanic). I also own a higher mileage Nissan SUV (wife) that has been flawless with only normal maintenance. I even know other F series owners that have 150,000 miles on their trucks with no problems-UGH! Still Ford loyal but had to vent!
This is transmission # 2 in 90,000 miles, the origional was replaced under warranty I am guessing as there is a "Ford Factory Remanufactured" label on the transmission.
Mine went out after I bought it. The fiber disks, seals etc were brittle due to over heating, wear etc. I put a transmission cooler on it but it was too late. The fluid had been changed 6 months before I got it so it looked great. If you tow or carry heavy loads you need the cooler & change the fluid every 25 K miles. As I said in my last message AAMCO also put upgraded parts in it. So far so good in 14 months. If you like the truck & the body & enine are great it would be worth it to keep. The truck ( 2 wheel drive)I bought was mint & bought in the middle of a snow storm from a womens estate for $3500. less than book. So it was worth having the tranny rebuilt. I also hda the rear main engine seal replaced as the oil pan on the 302 does not have to be dropped.
Make sure that they put in all the upgrades, there are five or six of them. FWIW, 91 and below are supposedly the worst, with upgrades beginning after that and supposedly all the problems were fixed by 1995. There is a website (by a company that builds ford racing transmissions somewhere in the south) that discusses all the upgrades etc. but I cannot remember the URL. SOrry. HTH
