my 97 f-150 w/5.4 triton. when in overdrive, the engine acts as if it is stuttering when i go up hill. nothing drastic, but extremely noticable. when i turn the overdrive off, it runs just fine. what gives here ? is this the engine ? the transmission ? some weird sensor ?
frozen guy, I had mine replaced under an extended warranty which paid for the diagnostics, parts and repair minus my deductable. The total was about $225. So, after paying the $100 deductable plus sales tax on the taxable items, I paid $104 total. Could I have done the job myself? Yes, I probably could have replaced the part and no, I could not have diagnosed the problem outside of attempting a trial and error method of moving as many of the coils around as would have been necessary to find the bad one or to determine if one was bad in the first place.
Your vehicle may not have individual coils on each plug as mine has, so your situation may be different from mine. At any rate, I recommend having someone with the proper equipment/expertise determine exactly what is causing the shudder before tearing blind into high dollar electrical components
Whatever it turns out to be, good luck in finding and correcting the problem.
frozen guy how many miles on your spark plugs?
One thing to look for too is for a leaking heater hose above #4 COP. The clamp is sometimes loose and coolant drips onto the coil which kills it.
i had it scoped a week ago, and it coded out as a misfire on #4. we replaced the plugs, but this didn't fix the problem. i am hoping that it might be the coil ( it has individual coils) on #4. Now it is doing the 'missing out' thing when i accelerate from a stop light and at about 40-45 mph till i hit 50 or so. Does this still sound like the coil, and do i need to replace 1 ? or all 8 ?
but pretend that i had the plugs changed, but ned to change the coil by myself......... could you tell me how to go about doing that. where do you uncouple the wires ? is the one small bolt holding the cover the only bolt ? does it just clip onto the top of the spark plug or are they attached in another way ? .........what do i need to know to change coil #4 to keep from screwing something else up ?.........
I had a similar issue once with my 1987 F-150, turned out that the transmission needed servicing. After I changed the transmission filter and fluid, the problem went away.
