I can only speak for my one motor.

I was quite surprised at the amount of carbon on the intake valves for 75,000 miles. When you look at the carbon and the position of the valves, it's not like carbon from a leaking stem seal. It was located on the side facing the intake port. And on the exhaust valves, the sealing faces had more pitting then I expected. For me, I believe that was the result of hot carbon being trapped between the valve and the valve seat. And of course like everyone else, mass quantities of black goo in the intake and a surprising amount when I washed out the head ports.

So if this motor ever gets off the engine stand it won't be back in the truck with the original CCV plumbing.

I'd have to unbox my old heads to look at the valves but I remember the runners were clean. And since I tuned it (shuts off egr) and cleaned my intake it stays clean.
Point is I think a large contributor to dirtying up the intake side is the EGR valve more than oil vapor. Of course the oil vapor is the "glue" if you will for the carbon soot but oil alone doesn't do it. I guess that's my opinion.
But back to catch cans.

It doesn't sound like yours is in that category, but if you were worried about it, I would take it in and have it actually tested. There is a special tool to measure the crankcase pressure.

Yes Bismic thats what i was trying to ask.
So to you owners who have routed the CCV to the atmosphere is your hose ever smokey?
Not a full blown cloud but have you ever observed it or smelled any fumes when you stop for a long stoplight or drive through for example?

Anyway back to catch cans.

Thats a good point Pete. While with the original motor I ran most the time with a secondary EGR valve sitting on the top of the intake. This motor, not so much. But the EGR will be fully blocked by two methods.

I’m not gonna complain about getting off topic this is all related anyway. I’m old enough to have had a few cars with what we used to call “road tubes” venting to atmosphere. A particular old truck I had had a lot of blow by and it made a good bit of smoke, mess, and smelled bad. I really don’t want to try that option. I think the factory set up pulls a little air through also, I realize a diesel doesn’t make vacuum like a gasser but I think the Venturi effect makes a little “pull”.

Those valves are pretty grungy Jack, I had my intake off when I did the oil cooler and there was considerable build up in the ports where the intake bolted up. I cleaned it up some with brushes and a shop vac but it wasn’t spotless when I got done. It may be too late to even worry about this at 200k miles but it has stuck in my mind that somehow that could be better. If I do modify something I hope to make it better rather than make It hassle a little harder.

I was really surprised at them, didn't expect that. All the intakes, and more so with the cylinders at the front.

Now and then I’ll catch a whiff but not enough to go back to routing that crap back to the intake. I don’t care what anyome says, the intake doesn’t need lubrication. When I pulled my turbo, intercooler, pipes and intake manifold it was clean and dry as could be. I did the reroute when my entire intake system was new and it still looks new after nearly 13k.

What/how did you plug the hole in the intake?

I have a S&B stage 2 on there now but my old intake I used a 1” PVC pipe plug. Shove it in and it’s not going anywhere.

So who is ready to laugh there @ off?
It got here today and if you dod the Amazon and use the free two day shipping they
also signed you up for prime and will be charging you for it after the free trial expires.

Anyway the reason for laughing your @ off is the size of this catch can thing.

That grill is on the inlet side of the top and the out is open to the port. I think to get the capacity you would need two or three of them .

EDIT : I forgot to say is not a bad assembly. Just need more than one for the 6.0L
