Transmission Downshift

My 2015 Escape SE AWD down shifts automatically when coming down a steep hiway hill after applying the brakes when going approximately 55 MPH. Is this normal..? Can't find anything in the owner's manual about it.. My 2015 F350 does not do this..

Has anybody experienced this auto downshifting when going down a hill on the hiway in their newer Escape ?

I just checked with Ford Dealership.. they say this auto-downshifting is normal.. I guess I won't worry about it..!

I just found this. We had a 2013 Escape that did that and now our 2016 Escape also does it. It's kind of like towing in the tow/haul mode on the trucks. It just prevents you from free wheeling and getting out of control. Just another entity trying to keep us from harming ourselves.

Yep.. I kind of like it now that I am used to it.. I hope it doesn't shorten the transmission's life..!

I think lots of autos do this to provide a bit more engine braking, normally just dropping out of overdrive, pretty sure my 2001 does it.
