1993 Explorer liftgate alignment problem

I attempted to make a small alignment on my liftgate and made it worse. I did not realize the upward force of the support cylinder and when I slightly loosened the hinge bolts and lifted the liftgate, the upper lip of the gate caught on the roof and raised the sheetmetal where the bottom of the hinge attaches to the gate. I removed the liftgate pounded down the raised sheetmetal and re-installed. It looked great until I put the support cylinders back on! Yep, to put the support cylinders on, I lifted the gate until I could slip the ball sockets on and the sheetmetal base again raised up and I'm back at square one!! Basically, the design is very poor because the hinge attaches to a structurally weak base. Any ideas as to how I can fix this problem?
