Bed Storage Solutions?

Hi,

I just did an order out on a supercab F250. I really wanted a crew cab but it was too long for the garage. In my current F150 crew cab I keep two small tool boxes. One has things like tie down straps, jumper cables etc in it. The other has a small air compressor for filling up low tires. As I now have a supercab I need to find homes for these.

I was really set on ordering the Undercover Swing Cases, one for each side but since I ordered the 5th wheel prep package I have a feeling the electrical connector will be in the way. I will have a tonneau cover on the bed so an under rail tool box won't work since I can't open the lid.

I'm thinking of canceling the 5th wheel prep package as I bought it for a just in case we ever get a small trailer aka <30 ft as I don't want a big monster.

What are people doing for storage in their truck beds? I was thinking of just using the Rubbermaid Action Packers as I have a number of them around the house but not sure how to keep those from bouncing around even if you tie strap them in place.

Thoughts?

I've got the CC, so for the most part I use the built in storage bin under the rear seat. I'm not sure what options are available for the SC seats, but you should be able to find something aftermarket. There was a thread recently on adding underseat storage to an XL that didn't have it built in, you might be able to pick up a few ideas there.

Under the tonneau cover, I use one of these:

I didn't specifically choose it because it's the best thing out there, I got it because it came free as part of a rebate package with the tonneau cover at the time. But hey, it works decently enough and it doesn't interfere with the fiver hitch at all. I've thought about the Swing Cases. Yes, you couldn't have one on the driver's side, since the plug is there, but the passenger side could take one. My worries would be with the fiver hooked up. I run the Demco Autoslide and I've contacted the tonneau rails a could of times with the pinbox so I'd be worried about hitting the Swing Case. But for you, since you don't plan on using your fiver package, the one side should work no problem. Actually, you probably could put one on the driver's side too, it would just cover the plug, so I don't think they sell them from factory with it. They look like they're removable, so I guess you can get them for now, and remove them if you want to tow with the fiver down the road.

I have the husky storage and you can put a lot of items under the rear seat.

That looks like the Action Packer in a way from Rubbermaid that could be an option.

I was looking at the under seat storage but then I might as well just use what I have. My goal since going to a smaller cab is to keep the rear area cleared.

The storage box is an idea but I use the Extang 2.0 cover and it doesn't lift up to the window like the bakflip does so I wouldn't be able to get in to the top of it. I would need side entry.

I appreciate your advice on the side swing cases. I may just cancel the 5th wheel package. We only ordered it for the "what if we ever get one" but I don't see us having one in the next few years. I can cross the bridge of adding the hitch when I get to it. Sure it will cost me more but that's fine.

As for covering the electrical panel in the bed that would be fine since as you mentioned they do remove. The issue is there is a bracket that remains and I have a feeling there wouldn't be enough clearance with the bracket but yes you could then remove them before using the 5th wheel.

After canceling the 5th wheel package I thought I was all set. That is until I was watching a video this morning on youtube for the install of the swing cases. I noticed how close they were to the back tailgate and then it hit me. The way the Extrang Solid Fold 2.0 cover locks in place I bet the lock down levers will hit the swing cases so as much as I want the cases it looks like I will go with either the under seat storage or the rubber maid action packer. Oh well such is life....
