Possible Turbo issues

Sup guys. I think/hope it's a turbo issue but yesterday i was towing the camper home and headed up an incline, it seemed like I lost a bit of power. Also noticed the boost was higher than I've ever seen. 29, not sure how long it held that high but it was the highest value. The power it usually has up the hills on the way home just wasn't there.

I've tried searching my issue and it's horrible......why can't we have threads on different forums with an end result. I'd settle for "I sold the truck" so I can just stop reading the thread.

On an incline reaching the top:
Boost. 25.5
IPR. 73.4
VGT. 42.4
EBP. 41.8
MAP. 38.9

After the trip Lowest Value/Highest Value
Boost. 0. 29
IPR. 21.6. 76.2
VGT. 14.7. 82.2
EBP. 14.8. 53
MAP. 14.3. 43.4

Thanks for all the help.

Just to start, are map baro and ebp close with the key off? 29pis boost (if it’s correct) sounds like the turbo is workin. Are you monitoring fuel pressure? If the fuel filters have been on there a while, I might consider a fresh set if you’re unsure of fuel psi. I’m guessing you have a monitor, did you get any codes? Fuel level above 1/4 tank?

EBP Map, and Baro are all close. 14.?
Fuel pressure has never been below 50 under floored conditions. Usually about 55
Filters are about 5k miles old
3/4 of a tank.

Thanks rusty axlerod.

typical vgt % duty cycle numbers should be:
low idle........73%
high idle......43%
cruise..........55%
light accel...67%
hard accel...38%
coast...........57%

Your EBP number looks high also. 53 psia is what you see at 4.7 volts. Pretty close to maximum of the sensor. A hard acceleration should be around 3.6 volts which would be around 41-42 psia

Thanks bismic. I assume I need an IDS to check the voltage on the ebp? Can't be done with torque pro?

Took a vid of a test run. EBP hits 50 psi easily.

WOT from 40 mph cruise speed:
EBP. 47.8 (hit 50 at some point during THAT WOT test)
VGT. 45.9
BOOST 23.3

70 MPH CRUISE:
EBP. 32
VGT. 52.2
Boost. 9. +/-2

Idle in gear:
EBP. 17
VGT. 64.6

WOT from dead stop:
EBP. 43.5
VGT. 43.2
Boost 22

Exhaust restriction or EBP sensor error? Maybe clean the sensor and tube (not sure how a clogged tube would cause it read higher) and check the connector closely. If you have the factory exhaust, there is a flange just ahead of the Cat that’s easy to get to, maybe crack it open there and re-check numbers with partially open exhaust.

And bump this thread back to the top, I’m not getting on here as often as I used to.

Thanks rusty axlerod. The truck is straight piped turbo back. The only thing I can do is replace the EBP sensor. I will double check the tube and sensor before hand. They both are less than 2 years old but I did go el' cheapo on it but not super cheap.

Ordered an alliant EBP sensor this morning. Have a feeling I should have ordered a turbo or at minimum, a rebuild kit.

I haven't replaced the ebp sensor yet. I have the sensor, just haven't put it on. I'm going to place the blame on long hours at work and we've camped the past 2 weekends.

Could a turbo cause excessive back pressure?

Hm, that’s odd. Wish I could be more help. It would seem to me if the turbo was stuck it would boost too high pretty quick under normal driving. I haven’t used it but there is an inspection port (plug) for the VGT linkage on the turbo housing. Might check for freedom of movement there.

Im still suspicious those EBP numbers are not accurate. To make much boost it needs something for the air to push against. With the straight pipe exhaust there just isn’t much there.
