Bigger tires with 3.73 gears?

How are 35” off road tires with 3.73 gears?

I am trying to decide what size to go with. I would like taller and wider, but want to hear what others think that are running them with 3.73 gears. I expect some power loss, but what’s the seat of the pants feel? Any regrets with going bigger? Hoping to hear from some that have or are living it, not just theorizing. Seems like all the posts I have read are about diesel or 4.30 geared gassers.

I also plan on using the OEM 18” wheels. Bigger tires will be my excuse to add a 3.5” level.

A little about my usage:
  • I do less than 10k miles per year. I hope off road tires will last 30-40k miles.
  • I estimate my driving as: 30% off road, 20% city, and 50% highway.
  • Some of the dirt roads that I regularly drive get very nasty in the rain, but we do not get rain all that often in Arizona.
  • Monthly camping trips with the family and gear.
  • Typically only tow 2-4 times a year; a 10k toy hauler.
  • I have always had all terrain tires, but they have left me wanting on more than one occasion.
Obviously, if I could do it over I would order 4.30 gears. So, please do not turn this into another gear thread. I am looking for opinions on tires. If I keep this truck past warranty I will look into an aggressive gear swap, but that is years down the road.

Stock tires: 275/70R18 Goodyear AT (conversion to inches 33.2/10.8)
If I stick with similar to stock tires, I am looking at 295/65R18 (33.1/11.6)
Bigger, perhaps 305/70R18 (34.8/12). Anyone running this?

Cooper STT Pro's, 305/70R/18 on stock wheels & stock suspension, 3:73 gears. I had the same stock tires as yours, when I changed to the 305's both the fuel mileage and speedometer readings remained the same, no mods required. Driving feels pretty much the same as with the stock tires except the STT's are a tad bit noisier, not any more sluggish than the stock tires as near as I can tell.

You are essentially going to a 34.8 in tire with the 305/70r18. The close factory option with the 20in wheels is close to 34.3. You will be fine and may feel a little power loss but not much. I am running 285/75r18's which is 34.8 as well. I hardly notice a difference, but then again I am not maxing out my towing weight either. 4.30's are not need unless you are running a 36-37in tire.

Thank you both for the input. I am going to consider the next size up of 315/70R18.

I have 325/60/R20 with stock suspension and I think I lost about 1MPG and the power loss if any feels minimal. I think mine measure out to be 35.4" The only rubbing I get is on the mudflap while decently articulating under a full turn to the right or left. I did have to use forscan to fix the speedo/tire size.

I had 35 inch and now 37 inch tires. Doesn't feel like I lost any power IMO. However I drive 90% city roads. If I drove 50% highway I wouldn't have 37 inch off road tires.
