Comparison

I do understand that the vehicles are on different levels, however, if one were to choose between a 2011 F150 w/ the 5.0L Coyote running at 147,000+ miles or a 2002 F250 w/ the 7.3L Powerstroke running at 202,000+ miles, which would be the preferred option?

The vehicles are different, but I doubt what you plan to do with them is different. What purpose will this truck serve? Do either come with maintenance records? All things being equal, I'd lean towards to 7.3L which will retain value longer and potentially give you better longevity.

They're so different, it's really going to depend what uses you have for them.

If you're not using your truck to pull heavy loads on a regular basis, then why buy a SD? The F150 can do a heavy load once in a while (within it's specifications) but I wouldn't recommend doing it daily. They just don't build those units for longevity under extreme use.

My use of the truck, as most modern day truck owners, would stricty be light duty. Specifically the kind of use for which the 150 is designed. However, this will probably be the last vehicle I purchase for myself (without the possible unforseen circumstance). That translates to a longevity need. Also, though, considering that this is my last planned vehicle purchase for myself, I am looking for something plush, at least somewhat anyway, but I do not drive my vehicle much currently (< 3500/yr, company vehicle for my weekly work).
With all that said, the 250 is pretty much as plush as you could get in a SD back in 2002 (leather) and priced at $15900, but the 150 is the Platinum package priced at $16990.
I know these concerns are frivolous, and not normally like me, but I hate to spend money, especially this kind of money. Thanks for the and opinions.

A Platinum 2011 is going to make a 2002 SD of any trim feel very outdated.

If you're looking for longevity, with light duty and that few yearly miles, I'd go with the F150 for sure. 5.0 is a good engine. 7.3L is as well, but it's aging, and it's still an expensive diesel to maintain.

If you want long life, and reliability, you'll probably get more of that from the F150 than the nearly 18 year old 7.3L SD.

my $0.02

Correction to previous info: the 150 has 174,000+ miles on it. Not sure if this would make a difference. It does have a lot of service records, so it seems to have been well and properly maintained by it's 1 owner.

Not for my budget. Been in the market for about 1 year, and serious for about 4 months. Just trying to get the biggest bang out of my cash bucks.

Many car/truck sales are getting nationwide in computers. Local dealers may not want to tell you about a super deal somewhere else.

My daughter bought a car through Carvana and I bought my current truck through TrueCar (saved $10k off the sticker plus negotiated additional stuff).

Carvana delivered the car in 3 days and took her old car away. Her car has been excellent.

Carsdirect, Autotrader, etc

Online car/truck shopping is becoming the Amazon way. Dealers just can't compete and it's making them angry.

I see thousands online.

I would keep Dodge in mind... I just looked on Carvana for trucks and found several. I like Tundra unless you need something bigger.

Online is where I've been looking: Craigslist, truecar, cars.com, Auto trader, carguru, even Facebook marketplace. Haven't set foot on a lot, and the only specific dealers I've looked at were those that I was specifically looking at a vehicle a saw as I was driving. I've looked at thousands, but an extreme few fit my perameters, cash budget and distance being the most important (not going to travel extensive distances for an old/cheap vehicle), but I have others as well. I know that these perameters are self imposed, but that is not what my inquiry is about.

Not sure if links allowed, but seriously. 2011 F150 with 113k on it for under $15k.

There's plenty of better trucks out there, don't be afraid to travel for them. A few hundred miles would only cost you a hundred bucks in fuel, but could save you thousands or 50-70k miles on the odometer
