Ford 9 Inch 3rd Member Question

This is a simple question.

What is the name of the part of a 9 Inch 3rd member, that bolts to the pinion carrier, and covers the Yoke?

Pic: 4851 is the Companion Flange .. 4614 is the Driving Pinion Bearing Retainer & Bearing Cup Assy. .. 4141 is the Carrier aka pumpkin.

There are several different types of each, as it depends what the 9" is from.

I am looking for the name of the shield that attaches to #4614. I can't tell if it's shown in that drawing. Maybe it's called a Shield.

I figured that's what you were asking about. Only the early 9's have it, it was later eliminated because it didn't really serve any purpose.

Here's a pic from the 1949/59 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog. 9" introduced in 1957 Ford Passenger Cars, Thunderbird & F100.

C0AW-4298-A .. Driving Pinion Bearing Retainer Bumper. Catalog says: 1957/59 - discard rubber pad.

What's the 9 installed in, your 1953 F100?

There's one of these C0AW bumpers on ebay, it's used = 95 bucks.

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any NOS

I was in my '53 F100. I just replaced it with a different ratio R&P and differential. I used a different carrier for the replacement. I thought my 9 Inch rear was from a '71 Torino. It was in the truck, when I bought it, but the whole drive train was '71 Torino at that time. Except for the axle housing, that drive train has been replaced. Even The axle housing was narrowed. One axle is still original, but shortened. That 3rd member was rebuilt with a 3.25 ratio and Auburn differential in 1998.

The 9's in the cars have right and left specific axle shafts, while the trucks use the same axle shafts right/left.

The car 9's don't fit the trucks very well, because they are different widths, some have rear coil suspension.

1957/72 F100 is the 9" of choice for 1948/52 F1's and 1953/56 F100's.

My axle shafts are right & left specific, but custom lengths, since I narrowed the housing, and tubbed the bed to get 10" wide tires under the bed. I still have leaf springs. 10" wide tires are as wide as I can get without going to coil springs and a 4 bar suspension. I haven't felt the need to do that. My axles are 28 spline. I think some trucks use 31 spline axles.

9 inch: 1957/67 F100 have 28 spline axle shafts. 1968/79 F100, 1975/79 F150 could have 28 or 31 spline axle shafts. 1980/86 F100/150 have 31 spline axle shafts.
