I'm swapping a Mallory Unilite Ignition to a DS2 Ignition in my 49 F1 with a mid 80's 5.0 motor I have a MSD blaster (45K) coil but not sure if I should use it with the stock Ignition box.......from what I understand the stock system does not like a Hi output coils. What stock coil (canister style with screw type terminals) would work?
I like using the stock DS2 type coil. This means going to the store and buying the horsehoe connector for that style coil, but they carry the connector and you are safe knowing everything is working together like it's supposed to be. Using the stock coil and the resistor on the primary of the coil means a long life for your DS2 module.
Thats what I'm after Dave........long life! And dependability. Went through 2 Unilite Modules in 4 years (only 3000 miles) bummmmmmer, so I'll give this DS2 with a stock coil. Do you know if the stock output volts are 38K? & ohm? Also, I don't have a harness to use so I'll need a ballast resistor?
Yes, you need a ballast resistor. You will also need to tie it into the starter circuit. If you get a starter solenoid that has the two small terminals, one of them is start the other is the resistor bypass for hotter spark during cranking. Also the start wire goes to the white wire terminal on the DS2 module to retard the timing during cranking, making the engine turn over easier when it's hot.
The ballast resistor is around .9 to 1.1 ohms. BWD RU19 is in the ballpark.
