Hey guys, gals. Been awhile since I could visit here. Just picked up a 2001 F350 7.3 6 speed dually 4x4. Hoping it's going to reliable enough to be the new tow rig around the farm. Have a few issues to work out first.
First order of business: after the drive home the rear diff was puking oil through the speed sensor. Turned out the vent was plugged. Now I'm quite low on oil.
How can I determine which rear I have and if it's limited slip or not? Any codes, markings on the housing, vin id?
Thanks
Spot #9 on your door tag will tell you what gears you have and if it is limited slip.
IIRC it's the same 75W140 gear oil that is used in the Sterling 10.5.
If you have a LS and don't use a gear oil with friction modifier already in it, I would only add modifier if the rear end chatters. Then I would add 1 oz. at a time until the chatter stops. Too much modifier will defeat the LS.
crawl under the truck and look at the tag on the rear housing cover. It might have 4.10 or 4L10....the L would indicate a locker and the "." would indicate open differential.
Last resort is to jack up the rear end, put the transmission in neutral, and spin a rear tire (set). If the other rear wheel set spins the same direction, it's an LS differential. If it spins the opposite, it's an open differential. While you're at it, if you count the ratio of driveshaft rotations to wheel rotations, you'll also know the axle ratio.

Don't think 2001 came with lockers. Only limited slip or open diff.
The L is for limited slip.
