Went to pop the hood the other day with the engine running. Got a pretty good shock. I am almost certain I need to check my grounds as some of the gauges and interior lights are sort of hit or miss. What would have caused the shock? A bad ground at the block? Would like to take care of this one pretty quick. Thanks.
It could be, I would also check for an ignition short. Such as a coil wire or maybe sparkplug wires. These could cause you vehicle to miss and run rough. They also pack quite a punch!
You can't have too many grounds. You need them from the engine to frame and engine to cab, I have seen guys leave them off and have all sorts of problems. One of the better ones was a guy who put his battery ground to the frame and ended up frying the speedo cable because that was the path the power took when he cranked it. He had actually got by for quite a while until cold weather came and he flooded it which required alot of excessive cranking.
wb3 is right on. If you have bad grounds all sorts of odd things can happen. Things that seem impossible as well as impossible to fix. Don't assume just because you see the wire or strap hooked up that it's working. Be sure you have clean metal to metal contact.
