intermitten speedometer

Any ideas as to why my speedometer just won't work on occassion? It isn't an issue of it being inaccurate or erratic, it does nothing.

There have been a few times since I got my truck on the road that the speedometer just does nothing, next time I drive it it works fine. Both times that it happened recenty I pulled over checked out the cable connections on both ends and they were in place, seemed to be connected properly. Of course when I hop back in a drive the truck it works fine again. Works fine more often than not.

Mechanical speedometer, so pretty obviously not an electrical issue. As I mentioned it seems that the cable is connected properly. If the cable was broken I would expect it to not work at all, ever. If the cable was dry and sticking, I'd expect needle to be bouncing a lot.

Ordered a cheap GPS speedo from Amazon to get by until I fix the problem, but I do need a working speedometer as the speeding ticket I got driving the car last weekend proves.

Replace the Cable the ends are Rounding Off and it is periodically Walking out of Gauge or Drive Gear. You can pull cable out of liner clean it and oil it and see if it Helps with the Sticking and Walking.

Okay, I still haven't gotten a chance to investigate this further, but it's completely dead now. Last few times I drove the truck the speedometer did nothing at all. Fortunately the cheap GPS speedo is working well enough to drive the truck when I need to.

Thinking about this I really needed to replace the speedometer DRIVEN gear, as speedometer wasn't really accurate before. Given history of truck (at least 2 body swaps) I don't know if the DRIVEN gear was ever the correct one for this truck and it's not running a stock tire size any more. I also don't know exactly how far it was off, I think about 5mph, but not sure about that. As such I want to order a few speedometer DRIVEN gears to swap around and see what is closest. I see 5 and 6 packs of the gears sold online and I'd like to just order one of those packs, but not sure which style is correct.

If it helps here's what I believe to be pertinent data from Marti Report:
VIN: F11YCD1****
131 Wheelbase
F110 F-100 4x4 5600 lb gvw
A NP435
08 3.50 conventional rear axle
8.15x15-4 ply tires

The truck is a '68 F-100 4x4, originally came with 3.50 gear ratio, 8.15x15 tires, NP435, and a Dana 21 transfer case. That's all still the same except for the tires are now 32" equivalent.

From what I've found in a chart on Fordification it probably used a C0DD-17271-B, but 3.50 and 8x15 isn't actually listed on the chart so I looked at 3.54 and 8x15 since its almost the same. Can anyone confirm that this would be the correct style of gear for my truck:
Amazon Amazon

Also does anyone know what the correct length of speedometer cable would be for my truck? If I can find a new cable at the right price I'll just go ahead and replace it as well.

RockAuto list one about 82", seen them other places at closer to 70". NPD seems to have a few lengths available, as well as replacement cores up to 120" length. I've read posts by Numberdummy saying 103" and not available, but I'm not sure if those applied to my truck. Also read about a similar vintage Econoline cable having the 103" length and correct cable ends, and a reproduction being available on eBay. Found that reproduction on eBay and price is right for me, but once again I don't know if the length applied to my truck.
