I have a 1973 short bed and the bed panels are completely shot. The only panels I could find were long bed panels from lmc which I ordered and have. I have cut the old panels off and the rest of the bed has been blasted. What is the best way to cut down and replace these panels? Wondering if anyone has done this before. Thanks in advance.
D6TZ-9927840-C .. Right Quarter Panel (bed side) - Use with 6 3/4' Styleside Bed / Obsolete
No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any, none on ebay.

I have not done this myself but considered doing it and researched some several years ago. I do know that you have to shorten both ends. And I believe there may be some manipulation to get the bottom angles/lines perfect. If I can find those dimensions I'll post them.
EDIT..... I guess I misunderstood. I thought your bottom was rotten..... LOL.
You don't want a rotten bottom!!....LOL.
Yep, there is a series of bottom braces (sheet metal tubes) that will need to match the position of the existing bottom. The bolts will need to go thru these and into the frame. This keeps the bolts from collapsing the bed bottom when you torque the bolts in.
Just turn your bed over and make sure where you mark the new bottom panel to match what are about to cut out.
You are asking for direct info on how to shorten your new long bed sides (that you have) to replace your short bed side panels. There have been a few involved threads on that exact process in the last year or so on this forum.Do an "advanced search" and poke around a bit ; you'll find what you need.
My quicky info, from memory, is the FRONT (nearest cab) only, is cut/shortened as opposed to the famous Chevy 67-72 sides that need BOTH front and rear shortened if cutting a long side down. Also ,from memory ,is you lose the front stake pocket hole. Probably the toughest is keeping enough metal to re-roll the front edge to re-attach to the headboard area. Again,do the search ,find the post/threads and go for it.good luck, gary
