K&N in the stock air housing is what I am using. Works great, lifetime filter, only need to clean it once a year, noticed quicker throttle response immediately. It breaths a lot better when I'm screaming down the highway at 75-80mph!
There are other companies coming out with the reuseable cotton gauze air filters now. Also check out Accel Blue filters.
As for the cost.....calculate how many times you will need to buy a paper air filter for your truck for as long as you plan to keep it, and multiply that number times the cost of each air filter. Then compare that to the current price of just one of the reuseable air filters available today. That will help you decide which way to go.
WIX filters are the best. I think the NAPA gold filters are made by DANA anyway. They usually run a few dollars less. I only use WIX filters and as soon as I started I got considerably better gas mileage, 11 MPG VS. 7MPG, and my oil pressure is 60-70 lbs at idle. I run two inline filters at the tank and one more right at the fuel pump.
Accels run about $20 vs. $45 for the K&N. WIX filters run $6 for air $5 for oil and $3 for fuel. If the extra cost means I don't have to fuss around cleaning filters then its worth it.
Cops Smops,, besides it's a 77,, they can't say a damn thing,,not that I would listen anyway. I don't even need cats or anything and that's the way it's gonna stay, dagnabit
Hmmm,, wonder how many times you've been to southern NJ. I consider it a completely different state than Northern, lol. But back to the point at hand,, so the general consensus is K&N? I'm assuming they make a variety of sizes, since I do not use the stock filter holder. They are cleanable too? As in, I can just soak them for awhile and blow them out? Maybe I should just go look myself
Yes, not only do they flow more air, but they are cleanable. a K&N will last as long as you have the truck if you take care of it properly. Use K&N filter cleaner and oil. let it air dry and oil it lightly before reinstalling it. DO NOT BLOW IT OFF WITH COMPRESSED AIR. you will ruin it. DO NOT use cleaner for foam type filters, it is too harsh.
