Good evening. New member here with a pricing question. My son is looking at a 87 F250 6.9 with manual trans. Truck seems to be in good shape cosmetically and mechanically. Has approx 127k Miles. New injection pump and injectors. Seller is asking 7000. I have no idea what these trucks are going for, nor can I find anything to compare it to. Thoughts on price? Will try to attach video. Located in NC.
welcome to FTE.
my opinion is that is the high end of the price scale for that truck.
being that the speedometer rolls back to zero at 100,000 miles, unless you know all the owners you have no idea how many miles are actually on it.
and being a 87, it will only have a 4 speed in it so fuel mileage will stink.
then there is the front axle, which will most likely need work due to the oversized tires.
plus it is 32 years old. he is asking almost half of what it cost new.

Thanks, valid points. I’m not concerned about fuel mileage, but do wish it wasn’t lifted and had original size rims/tires. I kind of thought price was high, but didn’t know what these trucks are selling for now. Thanks again.
Looked at the truck today. No rust, fairly straight for age. Couple dents and dings, paint not the best. Cold started easily. Pulls good through the gears and sounds good.
AC not working, slight oil leak at valve covers, and pulls a little to the right while driving.
Stated mileage verified by car fax. Owner has paperwork for work done-injection pump, injectors, starter, fuel pump, etc. Enjoyed the short drive I took though. Didn’t make an offer. Want to research these trucks more.
$7k is high for a newer body style regular cab with a TTB front axle, no turbo, quick and dirty lift probably blocks in the rear, and ghetto wheels. $5k if you really like the newer trucks. It is rust free which is worth a lot, and already a manual which adds value. Swapping a Dana 60 in the front will cost about $1000. A used turbo will be about $1000 as well. Another $1000 to swap a ZF5 if it doesn't have one already. So you're looking at $3k just to get it to what I would consider the bare minimum to be acceptable as a driver. The value in the truck is the rust free body, you need to decide what that's worth to you.

Appreciate the advice. Was thinking of offering $5k, but still not sure. Would be for my son to drive, mostly to school. He likes that body style. I’m with you on the wheels, really dislike them. Was hoping the seller had the originals, but doesn’t. The truck actually had more power than I thought it would. Actually kinda fun driving the short distance I did, but wish it wasn’t lifted as high with those rims/tires. But engine seems to run well, trans shifts fine, and body/frame have no rust. Just weighing pros and cons..
Thanks again for the help.
Get him a late 90's early 2000's VW TDI instead. That truck will get 20mpg on it's best day. A VW TDI can get close to 50mpg. Unless you are hauling, pulling, towing, working, or beating on these trucks, there is no point in spending $5000 on a truck that will just sit in a high school or college parking lot.
Yeah, he really wants an older 4wd truck and will be putting a good bit of his own money towards it. Not really concerned about fuel mileage at this point. Heck, it probably gets better than my Land Cruiser.
The somewhat recent fad of big wheels & low profile tires on a lifted 4x4 is retarded, and even worse on an old body style truck. Upside is he could easily trade those for stockers or appropriate off-road wheels/tires and probably pocket a few bucks in the process. It's a cool truck that would look great on some old school wheels with about 33" off road tires.

1987 was the first and last year of the 6.9 with ZF5 5 speed. The 6.9 also used 7.3 style GP controller and GP in 87.

That’s what I’m thinking. Should be fairly easy to sell the ghetto wheels as popular as they seem to be.
Hard to tell in vid, but the bodywork and paint looks professional, and the engine looks clean and not ghetto- fied..
Hard to get a study of it in a 30 sec clip, but it looks well built. Kinda surprised he's not a member here... Looks pro quality.
Things to consider..
The lift - is this a professional suspension job or hockey pucks?
Condition of interior.
The wheels - well not to my taste personally, I like big rubber and smaller rims - but they do look nice, not really wagon wheels with lo pro's.. I'd ride em' if they were on it already ..
The lift and taller tires help alot with fuel economy, and width will make for much longer wear.
Price wise. Good condition they bring 5 - 10k in good condition. Looks like this feller invested 5k into it.
He will get 7k asking price for it, and that seems like a fair deal. Maybe he will bargain if he's in a tough spot, but if he's not in a hurry...
It looks like a solid truck for a young man, color is nice sounds good, lower miles, good shape.
where they are in North Carolina, they drive pickups.
the closest VW dealer is 500 miles away in Virginia.
Does any of us go to the dealership anymore?
I have an IDI and a TDI. If I were going to school or commuting, I'd go for the VW 99% of the time. And no need for a stealership, because IDParts, Bora Parts, and Rock Auto has you covered.

Probably go the distance without alot of work.
If he can afford it I'd go for it.
Happy hunting.
Thanks, Paint looks better in the video. There are several scrapes, scratches, dings, etc but didn’t really bother us. You wouldn’t mind throwing fire wood in the back. Interior looks good. No rips, tears, or dash cracking that I saw. Originial shift **** has been replaced. Truck drives good, but does pull to the right.
