No spark at distributor

Hey all,

I got an ignition module all hooked up to my truck. I have spark at the coil but not inside the distributor. Im pretty dang sure its hooked up right. I used this diagram found from another thread.

This is a duraspark I system. It does not use the HEI dizzy, it uses the regular looking distributor. I tried shorting out the pickup with a Philips but nothing happened.

When you say you have spark at the coil do you mean it fires multiple times while trying to start the engine or that you get one arc by switching ignition on and off?

What I mean by having spark at the coil is that I can take a wire off the negative side and touch it to the engine block so it will arc out. If I do this with a spark plug plugged into the center of the coil I can see the spark plug fire.

All that proves is the coil works. The trigger box or pick up in the distributor could still be bad or wired wrong. Maybe you could some better help from someone in the 90's truck forums. I don't know enough about that system to walk you through it,

It is the duraspark I ignition system used in 1973/76 ford vehicles. I pulled a donor 390 for my '68 F250 out of a '75 F350 so I bought an ignition module to hook up to the dizzy and coil.

Are you sure it's a dura spark 1 and not a dura spark 2. Dura spark 2 used a blue tab module.

I think Brian is right. I may not be correct on the details but i think the modules used in 74 and 75 had the 7 wires (including the blue wire not found on later modules). RamblinMan, what colour is the grommet on your module? The diagram you posted has the red grommet. Apparently that was the most unreliable of the modules produced in the 70s.

I did not get the original ign box with the motor so I bought one from o reillys. The grommet color is like a turquoise blue. The wires from the dizzy are solid black, purple, and orange. The distributor looks like a regular distributor, not the HEI distributor with the big cap, which is why I think its duraspark I.

Ill post a picture of my set up.

OK. Look forward to the pic. Meanwhile I think I'm correct in saying that it is the modules that are Duraspark 1 or Duraspark 2, not the distributor. In other words the same distributor would work with both modules.

My local o reillys had a module with a blue grommet, should I go and exchange modules?

Given that your truck is a 68, you would not have the harness that plugs into the one with the red and white wires. Did you hook those wire up anywhere when you tried the ignition, and if so where?

I hooked the red wire to a 12v source coming off the coil, and the white wire to 'cranking' position, as I believe its supposed to retard the ignition to make starting easier.

Should I go back and get the blue grommet module?
