New guy here. I need some advice on what to do to swap out my knocking V10 to a 5.4. Now I know that people will say why in the hell are you doing that? First of all, I have a good 5.4 with about 120k, the only V10s I could find were $1200-$1500. Second, gas prices here in Canada are over $6/gallon. Third, I have my Powerstroke dually and my IDI for pulling anything I need. My questions are; will my 5.4 manual trans ECU work in my Ex, Can I bolt my V10 flex plate onto the 5.4, the wiring harnesses are the same? I would appreciate any input other than telling me to stick in a 12 valve. Cheers from Canada
Makes sense the way you explain it. Not sure mileage will change with the 5.4l. I think you'll be famous with this swap; it's never been done here on the Ex forum.
Never having owned a 5.4 or a V10, my advice here is anecdotal, but most posters who have experience with both claim similar gas mileage numbers so don't plan on saving much, if any, fuel with this swap.
Secondly... and don't take this the wrong way, but it's pretty silly to complain about fuel prices when you choose to drive an 8000 pound truck with the aerodynamic profile of a cinder block.
OP, welcome to FTE!! You'll find us a helpful bunch! I unfortunately don't know the answer to your question, but I'd be willing to be they're at a minimum different part numbers. I'd check rockauto.com and see if they are. I also can't imagine that the wiring harnesses are exact match. But, I could be wrong. You could run a part number search on that as well. Have you checked the engine swap section of this forum? May be something in there. Also, be sure to check the X tech folder. May be something there.
In any case, let us know what you do, and do a build thread!! We love pictures!
No the 5.4 manual pcm will not work unless you convert the X to a manual. Even then other things will not be right. Like security, and sensors, 10 injectors vs 8 on harness, 10 coils vs 8 on harness.
Difficult swap but it can be done with excursion pcm and 8 cyl harness.
You are going to need a donor truck. either F-150 or F-250. this opens up several cans of worms. mainly you'll need the donor to get the wiring harness
best bet would be to find a manual 5.4 superduty. even then, you're going to have issues with programming. and PATS (Superduty doesn't have, Excursion does)
honestly, you are going to be money ahead to just slap another V-10 in there and sell that 5.4. Or even see if a Junkyard will straight up trade you. They're worth about the same amount of money. Worst a junkyard can say is No
Thank you for the replies. My donor truck is a 02 F250 manual 2wd with 150k but the body is beat. I figured that the pcm will not jive with the Ex so I probably will dump that off. I am waiting on word about a gasser Ex for parts but don’t know yet if it’s an 8 or 10. Also I am right now dealing on a running driving 02 V10 XLT 4x4 with 150k with 3rd row and spare tire cover but the rockers are so-so it looks like $1200 Cdn so I pretty much have to buy that. I’m aware these 10’s like the gas but I do get 20+mpg with my diesels so if I got 15 with my Ex I could live with that. Pics below of the Ex I’m dealing on and also the rockers on my white one. Thanks again for the input and will keep you posted. $1200 Canadian needs the back window I don’t think I’m going to try to go lower. Just take it and run
Your best bet is to look around for a wrecked v10, check local auctions etc, you can buy a wrecked salvage truck with a v10 relatively inexpensive and have more than enough parts to part out and get your money back and have done the swap for free (or made money).
