I bought this truck on Tuesday and drove home about 30 miles and made 1 stop for about 15 mins then went another 10 mins home. Then Wednesday I drove it about 15 miles stopped for about 10mins and another 15 miles home. On Thursday I took it to get an emissions test done(required by state) and that trip was about 15 miles there. There was no line so I got right in idle for about 2 mins while they scan the truck info and take payment. Then they ask to shut the truck off and open the hood. The inspector installed cables to the battery (told to monitor rpm) then asked me to restart the truck. The truck wouldn’t do anything, no crank no clunk on the starter. I had power to the dash, and all other electrical items but won’t crank. I got out and jumped the starter, motor turned over like normal but still no start. I then disconnected the batteries and waited a few minutes then tried again and it eventually started after cycling the key several times. Ran for about 30-45 seconds then died as if the key was turned off. I fought this for about an hour same results before calling a tow truck to get it home.
Once home the truck started first try and ran for around 20 mins then died. I started to pay closer attention to what was happing when it would start and wouldn’t. If it’s cold it starts, hot nothing, also the trans temp and engine temp gauges do not move during the times it won’t crank but if it’s going to crank the gauges move to appropriate position. Also if it’s going to start the glow plugs and or injectors kick on, not sure which I’m hearing. I have no CEL on other then when the key is on acc it does light up like normal. The truck does not have a chip key and only mod I know of is EGR delete. I’ve switched out starter relay with known good one and no luck. Oil level is good, full tank of fuel and I know the previous owner and he said he has never had this problem and I do trust he is being honest. I have searched many forums and google but no luck. Any input from any of you would be greatly appreciated. I’m fairly mechanically inclined but not super familiar with the 6.0’s. Sorry for the long post just want to give as much detail as I can. Truck has 140,000 miles
thanks for any input and if I figure it out I will definitely post
That’s one item I still need to test, just a PITA to get get too!
A few updates, I have 4 codes that come up regularly. 2 are egr codes which make sense since it’s gone, the other 2 fall under the abs, U1900 and B2900. I only get the abs codes when the instruments don’t work and the truck won’t crank. Any ideas if the abs is connected to the instrument cluster that would not allow the cluster to work and truck to crank?
