First of all I'd like to thank everyone on this board for all of the help, advice and info. Without you folks I'd still be standing in my driveway cursing and scratching my head. My 69 f250 4x4 crewcab, Romeo, is almost ready for the road. When I dragged him home in July he was not running and most of the pieces were thrown in the back of the homemade box. I've got a few nagging problems that I hope you folks can help me with and with luck I'll have him registered and on the road next week!
1. I've installed a 76 360 that was wired for the ammeter and oil pressure gauges. My 69 is wired for idiot lights. How do I wire my gauges to this engine?
2. Carb linkage. I still can't figure out the stock linkage. I do want to keep the stock linkage as I want to keep the truck as original as possible for now. The truck has a 4 speed.
There are 3 linkage rods, 3 different lengths. 2 adjustable and 1 non adjustable.
There are 4 holes on the intermediate linkage.
There are 4 attachment points on my carb throttle linkage. Starting from the top they are a) ball stud (b)small hole (c) big hole and (d) nylon spring return grooved button.
What goes where? Could someone patiently guide me through this nightmare?
3. Crewcab speedo cable. I've tried all of the local sources for speedo cables and no luck. They don't even list any speedo cables for any fords that went to the transfercase. But I have found an outfit that might be able to make one up for me but they need the overall length. I guesstimate about 110". Do any of you fellow crewcabers have one you can measure for me?
And once again thanks. They say the internet is about sharing information and nowhere is that more true than on this site!
1. Replace the sending unit for the oil pressure with one for your application. I'd just dump the ammeter and go with a voltage gauge instead. It does a better job of telling you what's going on with your electrical system.
2. What carb do you have right now? If you're using a stock 2bbl, i may have a few pics that could help you.
3. Just a guess, but the crewcab speedo cable should be the same as a non crewcab. The transmission and transfer case are in the same position in the frame irregardless of cab size, so they should all be the same length for that year truck.
That throttle linkage is a real contraption and has parts that connect to the firewall for some reason. It is like one of those puzzles made of chains and rings, you have to get it all flipped around and pointed the right direction. Unless you are trying to keep it all original I would just ditch that piece of junk and get a cable type off of a little newer pickup. Or just run a small piece of cable right from the carb to the pedal arm. I did that on a 75 highboy for my brother in law and it has been working fine for almost 20 years.
Thanks guys, As stated in my post I do want to keep as original as possible for now. The carb is a stock 2 barrel. Even though the stock setup is pretty lame, once it's set up I shouldn't have any problem with it.
So what have you guys done for replacement speedo cables if they aren't even listed in the parts books?
Rab,
I have a line on a junker crewcab that I plan on getting some parts off for mine. If you want I'll try to get the cable for the speedo off of it. I believe its a 2wd auto though so it probably isn't the same length... I'll check it out though, maybe next weekend.
Please, please, please
Could someone please post a pic or explain the silly carb linkage to me?! It's the last thing I have to do to get my truck rolling under its own power. I know it's a pain in the butt but short of chasing old fords down on the street here in Calgary you guys are my only hope! Does the linkage push for throttle or pull? I know freightrain and ironbelly had some pics, which certainly helped but... Freightrain yours were a little out of focus and they were of an automatic. Is the setup the same (mostly) for a standard? My engine has a spring return button where your #3 rod (bottom of intermediate linkage to carb throttle) goes so that won't work for me. HELP
Do you have the assembly that bolts to the intake manifold and the linkage rod that goes to the fire wall and the one to the pedal arm ect? If I remember correctly the side with only one arm points up and connects to the firewall. The pedal arm hooks to the other arm that poits up and the carb linkage hooks to the arm that points down. I am going from memery and I may nor be right but that is how I remember it. If you don't get a better answer I will look at a 69 that is on a carlot near here and verify the installation.
I'm not sure if there are any significant differences between auto and manual and and differences between the years.
To answer some of your questions.
I strongly suspect the ball is for the actual throttle actuation.
When you PUSH on the gas pedal, it causes the throttle linkage to be PULLED toward the firewall which opens the throttle blades.
Please let me know if you need further pictures.
Oh, one more thing. Could it be that the confusion over your linkage is because there may have been a governor (or even cruise control) installed on it at one time?
GOOD LUCK!!!
