throtle linkage/ Cable??

throtle linkage/ Cable??
on my 74 f 100 4x4, the accelerator linkage is metal linkage, with the tube and ball pivot(female) that go to the carb, but the hole is wasted on it so the ball stud doesn't fit. Someone was just telling me my truck should have the throttle CABLE. Is this right? I have to replace this thing and want to get it right, and wondering if i need the cable setup??

you can convert it into cable setup if you want to. I don't see the point in doing so unless you're going with an aftermarket carburetor where the linkage doesn't pull back.
Only 1979 trucks had the cable, the older had threaded rods.
