Welcome to FTE!

'01 to '02 and it looks the same--you are probably good.

Generally you strip to motors to the bare long block. You install all the recipient electronics, intake, exhaust etc on the new motor. In this case, if it's the same stuff, you have a step or two saved.

BUT

Are these SOHC motors?

Yes both are sohc

Yes both are sohc, I know you can strip down to the long blocks and swap intake and etc but that is what I'm trying to avoid because it costs a lot more since I am paying a mechanic if he has to switch all that, I originally thought any 4.0 Vin E 4wd motor would work but some have the oil refill on drivers side and others that year are on the
passengers side so anybody's input is helpful cause trying to figure it out before I go buy the motor and the ranger engine has been the best deal I could find so far from a private party.

IIRC 4x4 motors had balance shafts, not sure that changes anything.

Beware those motors should have the chain tensioners and guides replaced before you install it. (passenger side requires engine removal to service) You might also double check the condition of the chains, all 3 or 4 of them. (Crank to jack shaft, crank to balancer, jack shaft to driver cam, front of engine, jack shaft to passenger cam, rear of motor)

IF the intakes look the same, no need to change. The idea is to have the recipient vehicle's computer and wiring harness marry up to the new motor.

Stay tuned, you might get more replies.

It should work one big hurdle was the split in 2000. 01 to 02 will work I have a 01 sport trac and a 02 sport with the original engine from the 01. (this engine had a guide on the left bank break engine luckily never jumped time engine came with it) I did do research on cross refrence between 01 and 02 and they interchange. I would imagine the ranger will be similar. may have to swap the intake. I do agree with 85e150 spend the cash and put chains in it while its out it has to be out to do the right bank chain anyways I would only use a well known brand for the timing set. the timing tool is available from OTC.
