Ranger engine compatibility
I have a 2001 Ranger with a 4.0 SOHC and I need to replace the motor. Can anyone tell me with exception to intake & exhaust manifolds and other miscellaneous items, what year and other model 4.0's will work in my truck? I think the compatibility checker on the web sites is actual replacement specific. Because right now, this is what I doing to myself!

Based on what I've looked at, they are pretty much all interchangeable accross the board, including Mustangs.
The main differences in blocks is the 4x4 model Exploder and possibly others with the balance shaft, vs. non-balance shaft motors.
Intake, exhaust and computer stuff is, as you note, specific to your vehicle.
This is an exhaustive look at such a swap, with several folks reporting by page 5 how well their swap worked.
Finally, ONE good thing that can be said about the 4.0 SOHC: It interchanges.

85E, Thanks for the response! I was thinking along those lines, but wasn't sure. After reading most of those post, I feel pretty good about it. Looks like the sons Ranger will get a new lease on life!
