I am trying to figure out how to tap into my backup lights on an 2000 F150 XLT. I need it for the wiring on a boat trailer that has a solenoid to lock out the brakes when backing up. Does anyone know the easiest way to do this?
It's real simple, just take off one of your rear taillights (two screws and a gentle tug) and look at the color of the back up light connector. On my 02 F-150 it is a black wire with a small pink (or was it purple?) stripe. Thats the best way, unless you have a wiring diagram!?
Well, there is a better way since cut wires are likely to become a weak point with corrosion.
The truck is already wired for all the trailer lighting you can need. I assume you only use the 4 pin connector since your trailer has hydraulic surge brakes. There is a relay and fuse in the truck for backup lights to the trailer, and if you get the 7 pin harness from ford it will have the wiring already there. All you do is plug it in (add the relay to the engine fuse box) and go! Its a little more involved, but its the BEST way to do it!
