Today when leaving school, I had a strange brake problem occur in my ‘99 F-250 Light Duty.
Shortly after pulling out of the parking lot, I went to slow down and my brake pedal pretty much went clean to the floor, and I could feel sort of a pulsing or grinding feeling coming through the pedal. There was little to no braking power at this time, just enough to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me. After this, my brakes worked normally again. When I got home I crawled under and checked out the lines, where they connect to rear drums, the little splitter on the rear axle, and also checked around master cylinder and found nowhere where fluid had leaked. Brake fluid was full and had just been flushed by a reputable shop a few months ago. My pedal has always gone pretty low before the brakes begin to engage, but I’ve never really had a problem stopping. They do get a lot stronger if I pump them a few times while stopping. My dad has owned this truck since brand new and as far as I know it’s always been that way. My question is what could’ve happened and should I get this checked out?
You can't hang on the past.
Fix the issue you have now or risk accident. You just had a warning.
Master cylinder internal leakage, push rod length etc.
Pumping up indicates air or a leak by.
Fluid does not compress.
Good luck.
Well I decided to take it on to a shop. Rather be safe than sorry and brakes aren’t something I really want to work on myself. We’ll find out by tomorrow!
Shop says that I need a new master cylinder and brake booster. The master cylinder is understandable, but the pedal was always extremely easy to push down and you could tell the booster got proper suction and worked fine so I don’t see the reason for booster. Anyways, I was quoted $980 for the job. Sounds steep to me.
