New engine after 53000 miles???

I have a 2012 F150 with a 5.0 engine with 53000 miles on it. Three weeks ago I took it in to the Ford dealer for the transmission recall and an intermittent low oil pressure light. I am being told now that I have to replace the engine ON A 7 YEAR OLD Ford with 53000 miles on it. $12000!!!! Oil pressure sensor was leaking and was replaced ($500) which did not fix the problem. Any suggestions? I don’t tow/haul with this truck.

What is the oil pressure ?
Does the motor make noise ?
Has the dealer determined there is internal damage ? WHAT ? HOW ?

What viscosity oil are you using ?
If it is always HOT where you live, maybe a slightly thicker viscosity oil would help the pressure.

What level of maintenance? Personally, I think the oil in these engines needs to be changed by 4,000 miles or 5,000 miles at the latest. Much like the previous 5.4 engines. For mine it is with the Motorcraft synthetic blend and Motorcraft oil filter. I have a 2013 F-150 5.0 - it is problem free at 45,000 miles.

Did they do a leak down test?

Oil pressure after putting a gauge on it reads 14, then drops to 10 at hot idle.
No noise, mechanic that looked at my truck when it started (buddy, during an oil change, not during a service visit) saw that the oil sensor was leaking a bit and based on what the gauge was doing said bad sensor. Ford dealership changed the sensor and the warning came back.
Dealer went straight to either engine tear down (22-25 hours @$150 an hour labor + parts) to find out what is wrong or replace the engine ($7000 + labor - probably $10K ish).
No internal engine damage determined, just recommended engine replacement.

I go by the oil life on the computer, synthetic oil change @90-95% and Fram Gold Guard filters. I haven't had any issues until now

"Did they do a leak down test?"

I don't think so, I don't know what that is.

I think it is 5W-20, whatever is recommended in the manual.

The absolute best part so far was when I contacted Ford Customer Care at the recommendation of my Service Rep to see if they would do anything to help me, the dude in India or wherever kept telling me to take my truck in to get the latest recall done - which was the reason my truck went to the dealer in the first place. They finally elevated me to a "supervisor" who told me that my powertrain warranty expired a year ago and that there was nothing Ford could do for me. Ok, I guess there is nothing I can do for Ford either, like recommending Ford F-150s or giving a good rating for customer service, or telling everyone I know about how Ford takes care of and stands behind their products.

But is the engine making any noise? Loss of power? I'd change the oil to 5W-30 and get rid of that 5W-20.

You won't find many companies that stand behind their products after the warranty expires.

I believe you are in Hawaii ?? Should be "WARM" there year round ? I would look at 10W30 oil and motorcraft filter and then check the oil pressure... When things warm up, the thin oil can leak thru internal clearances and reduce pressure.. The FIRST thing I would do is increase the viscosity somewhat... AND probably not use synthetic oil .

WHY would anyone tear down a motor for a complete rebuild when it shows no signs of damage ? Either the oil pump or check valve is worn, OR you have way to THIN of oil in it. ( since you hear no cam chain / etc noise and have no codes)........ see how much pressure you gain with a quick test of DYNO oil of 10w 30 viscosity............. and report back.

Low oil pressure could be a sign your oil pump is failing. If you rev up and light goes off, or perhaps your beyond that point.

My sons 2012 5.0 displayed low oil pressure and the pump failed and the engine had to be replaced. Seems this happens, just don’t know the frequency. One would think the indication of an issue with the oil pump would be designed to occur before a catastrophic engine failure. But I suppose that’s too much to expect!

Did they check your oil and show you any wear debris from the engine, or did the engine seize?

Good luck to you.

PS a new engine is cheaper than a new truck.

I agree with steve(ill). Try changing the oil to 10W30. Keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge when driving it. If the pressure increases you might have lucked out. OR contact your favorite parts place and get a high pressure, or high volume oil pump for a replacement. I hope that you got lucky, but if not, it can still be saved with a new oil pump.
