I have a 1989 Ford F-350 460 cid 5 speed, I has started using a lot of oil 3qts per 1000 miles it has 85000 miles on it. There are no leaks (leaves no oil spots, have had it on lift when running I see no leaks). Checked the spark plugs and number 8 was not fouled but had a considerable amount of depoists on it. I plan on running a compression check shortly. I was told that Ford had some intake manifold gasket problems on these engines and this could be the problem. Timing is set correctly. The only problem I found was there was an engine code set calling the O2 sensor as lean. Replaced the o2 sensor. Still high oil consumption. Does anyone have an idea before I rip this engine out and rebuild it.
Did you ever resolve this problem? I've heard it's common for the 460's to eat oil and I'm at about 2 quarts every 10000 miles on my 89 F250 w/ 460 and 5spd, only 61000 miles (my wife's grand parents used it to tow their fifth wheel but not for much else).
You may want to make sure the oil drain holes under the valve covers are not plugged, the oil would have no place to go except through the pcv valve. Mine uses 1 qt. in 800 miles. I don't care because it runs excellent.
