So, original shocks need to come off. I got the fronts replaced finally after working through the bolts that have seen almost 20 years of New England and Canada. Rear top bolts... Seems like we broke\bent the tab that holds the nut like we did the front. How do you get to the top of it to be able to hold it with a wrench or something to get the 2 top bolts off.
The nut/bolt just spins in its hole. The truck is a bit crusty and the lock washer that holds the screw in place, didnt hold. It probably bent like the fronts.
Cutting/tapping it out would work, but how can you replace the frame side of it? I didnt see any access from below, nor from the rear cab of the truck..
The upper rear shock bolts just suck. Very poor design. I was in the same boat a couple of weeks ago. The upper bolt goes into a sheet metal j nut I think it is called. I had to cut the lower bolt off and then I was able to manuver the shock around enough to get a thin socket up there and tightened one bolt to break it off. Then the other stripped off. I yanked the shock down and it broke.
So there is a way to get a socket or a wrench to the other side of the shock bolt? I didnt have a lift so it was a little hard to tell. I couldnt really feel around and find one.
Hmm, we were using a 10mm socket. but if that stupid clip is whats broke, thats going to really suck. Why would something like that be used to secure the top of a shock to the frame?

because it is an easy to use and effective design. Blind nuts are great when getting a wrench on the backside nut would be made difficult due to access, Ford uses them effectively in several places through out the excursion
If yours is truly broken somebody had to have hammered it with a air impact pretty hard, getting a pair of locking pliers on the back but is no easy task.

I grabbed my boroscope and fished around. Now with a little more light i can see the entry way. I definitely dont have a blind nut, its just a normal nut thats rusted all to hell.

then someone broke the original and just used a normal nut. I recommend replacing it with a blind nut. They are cheap enough and work well. Put some anti seize on the threads
