Awning Mildew

The underside of the awning on my travel trailer grows mildew over the winter. It sits outside in the open and whenever it rains water either enters from the ends or penetrates the vinyl.

Every spring I spray it with a water and bleach solution then scrub with a long handled brush and finally rinse with the pressure washer. Not a fun process working with bleach overhead.

Is there anyway to prevent the mildew without parking it under a covered area or is it just a part of owning a trailer that sits outside?

Mine was a little mildewed after not being used for a couple years. I unrolled it and then sprayed it with a moderately strong soap as it was rolled back up. Let it sit for a couple hours, unroll, rinse, dry, done.

Moisture has to be coming in from the ends. An end cap to prevent that would be interesting.

There's not a whole lot you can do to prevent it. Water sitting rolled up = mildew. I used to do the bleach/water thing but got tired of the solution dripping on my clothes and discoloring them so I bought a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser mop and do it that way. Just take a bucket of water/towels with you. The result is amazing. Not sure what's in a magic eraser but it works.

That sounds like a much better solution, I will give that a try next time.

Just FYI, the melamine foam in Magic Eraser is basically sandpaper. You're sanding down your awning. Not sure that's a sustainable thing to do.

Try a vinegar and water solution instead of the bleach.

Lol thank you for that info. Upon further research the melamine from the eraser will wear down the awning to shreds in 8433 uses. I'll be long dead before that happens,

I had good results with a product from Clorox. Mildew root penetrate.Spayed it on then used a long brush. It would probably work well with spraying it on then rolling the awning up.I will try that next time.Just how much trouble is it to remove the awning for the winter?

I've had phenomenal results using a product called Marine 31. I use it on my boat seats and I used it on my RV awning. Spray on, wait 3 minutes, rinse. Easy as that. Blew me away the first time I used it on really bad vinyl boat seats. Several videos online that show how effective it is. It's not cheap, but worth every penny!

A friend recommended Slimy Grimy. Was told to make sure it is the original, not a knock off. We bought a gallon of it and once it warms up will give it a try, so no useful information until I try it.
