Baltimore Tunnel??

Anybody know of a good way to travel pulling a camper from northern New Jersey to Williamsburg Va? Can't go straight down 95 through tunnel due to camper propane bottles.

Thank you!

MK

Don't go through tunnel, go around the beltway.

I695 is the beltway that goes around Baltimore. You can go either direction, as it is almost the same distance. The eastern side will take you over the Francis Scott Key Bridge. I've pulled my RV many times through this area.

Can’t you just turn the bottles off/disconnect while going through tunnel? Usually can do that at the entrance checkpoint and be fine.

Personally I would take the outer loop of I-695 coming south. Be careful the time you go through Baltimore and DC, That is a challenging area to pull a camper, I-95 South of DC is packed with traffic.

If you take US301 South after you come over the Delaware Bridge and follow it to MD 50 and take the Bay Bridge and continue on 301 you will avoid some traffic. If you want a real adventure Take US13 out of Wilmington and follow it all the way down the DelMarVa peninsula crossing the Bay Bridge Tunnel ($20 toll with camper), that will drop you in VA Beach and you just need to head west on I-64 to Williamsburg.

I’d probably take I78 west to Harrisburg, pick up I81 south to Staunton, and than take I64 east to W’burg.

It’s about 125 miles longer than taking I95. However, it might well take less time. IIRC, the only toll is the bridge near Phillipsburg.

Seriously!

Its not an issue of the propane supply being turned on/off, it is the bottles themselves. Here is what is posted on the Maryland transportation site:

Vehicles carrying bottled propane gas in excess of 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using both the Fort McHenry and Baltimore Harbor tunnels. For additional information regarding these restrictions, please call 410-537-1374.

We typically take 301 down the DelMarVa peninsula then over the Bay Bridge on 50 then onto the D.C. Beltway then back to 95 when heading to points South. A few miles extra but worlds different as far as traffic, tolls and general hassle plus the scenery is better!

I peronally try to avoid the whole mess. For me since I live more western I'd rather make my way towards Harrisonburg pa and either stay on I 81 or you could take US 15S towards Gettysburg, passing thru Frederick on down to the DC beltway.

All those tolls and then I95 being the disaster it is, I would avoid it unless it is mid day or at night, like after 8 pm.

Going through Frederick (I was raised in Frederick) is fine except for 15 south of Point of Rocks, that road has been the same for 40+ years. Leesburg is so grown up now getting to 29 and then 17 to Fredericksburg is a challenge. MD to VA crossings of the Potomac are always a pain.

A variation on the Harrisburg route is to take I81 south to I66 east, and then pick up US17 at Marshall and take it south to pick up I95 at Fredericksburg, VA.

HTH,

Leave the bottles home and pickup new ones at destination

or bring empty ones and fill them close to arrival

The bridge is not too bad if there is no cross wind. I have been on that bridge with cross wind. Yeah it was a fun time for me in the old trailer. If I am going south, I generally go the western side of the 695 loop. Baltimore and DC are the pits when it comes to traffic.

Good luck with the trip planning.
