1964/1965 mess

Hello,

I have a truck that I aquired from my father. It is from CA. The CA title said 1964 F100 and the number matched the data plate on the door. I got it registered and titled in TN no problem. I decided to sell the truck and the interested party told me it was a 1965 not 1964 based on the grill design and I beam suspension. He suggested I find the frame VIN and see if the numbers match. I found the frame number and of course they do not match. Frame says F25DR712427. So 1965 F250 made July 1965 in San Jose with a V8? I am going to get the title corrected, But after looking at the truck, I noticed it has 5 lug wheels and F100 fender badges. No idea about the history of the truck. My dad passed away years ago. Maybe someone didn't like 8 lug wheels?

Is the truck a long bed? I tried three different decoders to make sure it decoded right, and it's definitely a 1965 F250 frame.

Do you have any pictures of the truck?

Sounds like a horse of many colors. 5 lug would indicate 1/2 ton as you know. Where are the emblems on the side? Are they on the hood or on the fender. Fender would indicate 65 or 66. Where are the turn signals? Are they in the grill or the upper valance? In upper valance would indicate 65 or 66. The guy told you the grill was 65. Are there two rows of square openings in the grill. That is a 65 grill 1 year only and replace by Ford as a replacement part with a 66 grill so the 65 grills are getting harder to fund. Twin I beam is definitely 65 or newer as 64 was last year for the solid front axle. I am not an expert by any means but I would think converting a 3/4 ton to 5 bolt hubs would be a pita. You would have to switch the rear axle and probably the front spindles as a 1/2 ton would have lighter spindles. Just my thought on that I probably am wrong.

That is a 65 or newer. 64 with a V8 would have been a 292 Y block. Maybe the door was replaced at one time and the warranty tags never got changed

I'm wondering about that gas tank setup. Obviously the original behind the seat is discontinued. Where is the one with the side hatch located?

Post a picture of the door plate. ND will show up eventually and decode it and possibly tell you why it was titled as a 64. Also if it was wrecked at some time it could have had the frame snout from another truck welded on it. There is another stamping under the cab on the passenger side just aft of the cab mount, it is hard to find and even harder to read with the cab on but it's there.

I am pretty sure its a 65 F250. I knew the rear end has been swapped out from something else, a lincoln maybe, that has rear disc. Also the front has disc brakes. So that explains the 5 lug wheels. I am guessing the door was replaced or something and the data plate wasnt changed. I mean the truck is 54/55 years old. Who knows how many people owned it. No idea about the tanks. I know it has dual tanks and the conversion was done long ago. I asked my older brother since he helped my dad do some things to it. As far as he knew, my dad bought it like that.

Thanks. It's a nice truck by the way. Got nice body trim and would look even sharper without that cap. Good luck.

Thanks. The body is in pretty decent shape for as old as it is. Since it lived in southern CA its whole life not much more than surface rust. The bed is intact and no rusty holes. Im not a fan of the cap either. The bed is full of parts and a extra transmission, so I guess thats why it was on there. I wouldn't keep it that way.

Since you know the rear and at least front hubs have been changed, I would suspect you do in fact have a '65 F250. The grill is '65 for sure. You appear to have a different engine than the original as the valve covers are not what I have seen on factory '65-'66 352 engines. The original truck valve covers were flat topped.

My guess is the door was replaced at one time, and the fender too since the badge has 100 on it. You already know the rear axle and front hubs are not original, so that solves the 5 lug question.

The engine is definitely not original. My dad built or had it built. I think it's a 390. I am going to put the correct fender badges on it.

Since you have the 5 lug hubs on it, I would just leave the 100 badges on it instead of putting 250 on it and confusing the people that know a 250 should have 8 lug wheels. It looks as a 100 should as is now.

I just noticed the dual master cylinder and power brakes that were added. Looks to be a good sized transmission cooler behind the grill also.

Good luck finding any, Ford obsoleted them in September 1965, replaced them with 1966 emblems. No one reproduces the 1965 emblems.

Frame VIN decodes to a 1965 F250 2WD 352 2V assembled in San Jose CA

Anodized aluminum grille is 1965 as are the fender emblems. Upper grille panel/parking lamps, V8 hood emblem and side mouldings are 1965/66.

Powered by Ford valve covers introduced in 1967. 1965 F100/350 352: Black engine, gold valve covers. 1966 F100/350 352: Engine painted Ford Corporate Blue including the valve covers.

The only fuel tank installed in 1961/66's was the in-cab tank. The aluminum fuel door on the quarter panel is the dead bang give-away that the tank is aftermarket.

1977 was the first year that F100/350's have painted body color fuel doors for the mid-ship and aft axle fuel tanks.
