you can do t your self much cheaper...it costs me about 150 to do mne but i used hi performance wires, and bosh +4 plugs...i did not notce much diff in the plugs and wll be going back to regular autolite platnums next time...flush fill radiator and check ALL fluids, thats about it i think...
If you are going to do the tuneup yourself, the right side plugs are easiest to get to thru the wheel well. I also suggest replacing one plug and wire at a time to avoid messing up the firing order. Good luck!!
i did a partial tne up mostly cause it cant hurt and can help maintain gas mileage...i did plugs wires and changed oil as well as drained and topped off radiator. but then again i changed all fluid in t-case...tranny, and both axles...all with synthetic...i plan to do brakes and Power steering pump soon...just cause it cant hurt...
Are you having any problems with the Explorer? Is the engine running rough, or gas mileage dropping? Any symptoms, or are you concerned becasue the dealer told you this?
If you want a tune-up, I am like everyone else and recommend doing it yourself if you are comfortable doing the work.
-Plugs
-Wires
-Fuel Filter
-Replace air filter
-Clean IAC and mass air meter
-Oil change
-Check radiator and tranny fluids
-Visually check rear-end for leaks
That sounds like a lot to some, but that is what I consider a tune-up.
I hear you should use Autolite double platinum plugs because the plugs in each bank get the opposite polarity spark. So what this
does
is erode the outer electrode on one plug, while
eroding the center electrode on the plug in the other bank. This is why
having double platinum (platinum on both
electrodes) is important. Another thing to remember, the plugs fire on
EVERY revolution of the crank, not every other
revolution as with a conventional ignition. So, when you are turning
4000
RPMs, the ignition system is firing the
equivalent of 8000 RPMs!!! Autolite, and Motorcraft are the only double
platinum plugs, and they are made by Honeywell.
With the standard Bosch platinums, and the +4s, only the center
electrode
is platinum.
I see the logic in that the newer ignitions fires twice as much as a conventional engine.
A conventional engine turning 4000 rpms firing on every other revolution would mean that each plug fired 2000 times.
The newer engines would still only fire the plugs 4000 times not 8000 because it does not fire twice per revolution.
However, I know the point you were trying to make is that plugs work twice as hard now than before.
The main thing is the opposite polarity. Mine came with the plugs on one side having the platinum elecrode on the center electrode and the other side with it on the side electrode. The autolite double platinum plugs have platinum on BOTH electrodes, so they work equally well on both sides.
yeah i have pics but i dont want to post them til the truck is complete..i still need to get some decent stripes and some body work...my eddie bauer had what looked like ground effects front to back...not the usual lke i see just underneath the doors...i took it all out and plan to bondo the area behind the rear tire so t looks normal...other than the embroidery on the seats you cant tell i have an eddie bauer anymore...i sanded and panted the area under the doors that is panted tan...now its black i also painted the trim area (some kind of body moulding not sure of the name) its about half way up from bottom of truck on doors..thats black i taped off the crome stripes inside it and hand panted, VERY CAREFULLY, the word "explorer" in bright yellow cant believe i did it with no brush lines...just about everthing i have dont to the truck is custom...never seen it on an explorer before like i have done...when it is completed i promise i will have pics on this board and/or in my gallery, but if i can get my digital cam workng i will put one of current look in the gallery this week for ya...
