There is the consideration of a remote starter... This can be done on carb'd vehicles. Many after market systems have an AUX (even the P/lock can be used if you have no power locks)channel that can be used to power a solenoid through a relay that will actuate the throttle, set the choke, and pump some gas down the carb to the intake. You hit can hit the Aux button as many time as you think is needed to give it more than one pump. you can also use the Aux channel to turn off the auto choke once it has run for couple mins. There are lots of options for preheating a vehicle you just have to be creative.
I have done a couple of these sort of installs over the years..
I don't know if I would do a remote start. Problem is the truck will be parked over night inside a metal building. Without insulation it would get cold inside the building over night during winter but its the only way to ensure rats don't decide to feast on the wiring or hoses.

Ya not something we have an issue with here since we are rat free in Alberta so I forget the about issues others have to deal with in regards to the little buggers. If it is parked inside then a block heater is the best option but don't worry about the block heater, the chances of it ever leaking are infinitesimally small...
