At least it is an option available and show when building the vehicle (picked up my 2019 Escape a few days ago), I had no idea that Ford was shipping their F-350 without a reducer for the hitch on the back until I got to the dealer to pick my new truck up truck . You have another benefit shipping that cover to Canada would have been a lot more expensive then what you paid
My '19 Escape did not come with the factory retractable cargo cover.
I found one on ebay, $57 including shipping.
I figure shipping was maybe $10-$15, so let's call it $12.
So the retail cost of the cover is maybe $45.
That means that the guy who sold it to me paid maybe $30-$35?
That cargo cover is a $135 option, even on the $33k Titanium edition. And it is shipped loose and installed by the dealer!!!!!!
What a rip off.
You're right, it's a rip off. We bought our 2016 SE new in 16 and it didn't come with this cover either. We were trading in our 13 which came with the cover and it matched so we just kept the one out of the 13. Something so small could keep people so happy. In this day and age, people need to hide what is in their cars for fear of their vehicle getting broken into. These companies know this which is why this became an option. At least that's my thoughts. Some cars now don't come with spare tires and I remember when new trucks didn't come with a rear bumper. I believe by law you need one so... I may be wrong about some of this but that's what I see from my sheltered world.
Is the ebay part the same quality as the Ford part? I don't know the answer to this, that's why I'm asking.
As I did not buy the factory part, I cannot speak to its quality.
The one that I got off of ebay looks to be pretty well made. I am happy with it. No 3/36000 warranty, but I can replace it 3 times and still be nearly even.
There is no surprise to me that factory options have huge markups. But taking a $35 part and selling it for $135 (OK, dealer cost is $127) is extreme. Especially when the part should be standard equipment on the top trim level Titanium.
And while we are at it, mud/splash guards are a $210 option, and they are dealer installed too. And not standard on the Titanium trim.
You can buy a full set of Weathertech splash guards for $80 shipped. And they fit great. I have a pair on the rear of my Escape. Took me longer to get the wrench out and out it and put it away than it did to install the guards.
Nickle and diming really pi** me off. $33k to start for a Titanium and Ford has to screw me for another couple of hundred dollars?
Same is true for SD. Some of these guys are spending $80k on a new SD, but wheel well liners (which were standard until Ford "decontented" them in the early 2000s) cost $350.
