I have a 6.8l v10 1999 ford super duty 4 door XL version and I was wondering if an edge tuner would effect my transmission. Like making more pressure on the bypass line and causing heating issues. I would like to run my tuner but every onevtells me it can make trans hot because it puts more pressure on my bypass so I've not been using it. Any info would be great. Thanks
Yes, tuners do make adjustments to auto trannys. It has to. Now if it helps or hurts in the tranny in the long run, that depends on the tunes. While I'm a fan of custom tunes, even those can be badly written that can cause damage to parts. How one handles their new found power can also affect longevity of the parts as well.
There was a saying that was used quite a bit when I was on here really frequently: "Have to pay to play."
I just go by what the presets are nothing custom but was just wondering if they up the pressure on trans. Like would it make the fluid bypass the cooler and just heat the trans up or do they keep same pressure and just adjust the shift. I don't use the truck for a hotrod just for hauling a trailer with my kioti tractor on it and for groceries

Who knows, it's why running canned tunes is never recommended. You always get tunes that you know what they are from a reliable source.
So edge tuners aren't a safe tune for my truck but should take it to a person who tunes trucks for towing and grocery getting and have them tell me which tune is best for me???
That last post sounded sarcastic I didn't mean for it to be I just don't understand how these tuner companies can get away with selling crap that doesn't work as it should but that's how it goes I suppose. Thanks for the input though I'll look into the tuners more carefully now
Nothing wrong with the SCT device, it's the preloaded tunes that are terrible. No need to take your truck anywhere, contact MPT or 5 Star tuning and for about 65.00 they will write you a custom tune that you can upload. It will be specific to your truck and PCM calibration and to your needs.
Ok thanks I'll look into it and see how much it costs, if its not to much i prob. will just do that to save all the hassle of stressing over if the tuner is tearing up something thank you.

It's called marketing and having caveats.
That's not to say that some people don't experience any problems with even canned tunes. Quite possible that there aren't any issues for some. Sometimes it also depends on the engine/tranny combination, some were more forgiving then others. Edge tuners on a 6.0l PSD for instance didn't work out all that great more often then not.
Truth be told, it may actually be better to go into the forum specifically for your model/engine/tranny and see what they have to say. Not everyone hangs out in all of the forums. Might help with your research as well.
Although on average, there aren't that many situations were I wouldn't recommend custom over "off the shelf" one size fits all for just about anything not just vehicle tunes.
To me, it isn't about just doing, it's about doing it right. But that is just me.
If these tuners were done right they wouldn't be much of a problem but I guess they can cover a wider range of vehicles without changing the programming in there tuner. I can see how there making a huge profit out of people like me that didn't know any better. As for custom tunes can any tuner be used to put a tune into for my truck. Like that edge tuner I have??

It's really hard to individualize the tunes and still be able to sell in a mass production. Some off the shelf tunes run great for some people, some people don't like it. Sometimes, with their driving habits, their truck doesn't do well with it etc. Not all the time mind you, some people have zero complaints and/or issues.

When I first go the modding bug, I feel for the canned tunes as well. Shift on the fly and all that. It happens, part of the learning experience and part of the old saying "Pay to Play".

At one time, I think there was a vendor that was selling a modified version of the Edge tuner that accepted custom tunes. Don't know if it was strictly for diesel rigs or if it also accommodated gas burners as well. But I do think it was for models of this century. Don't know if it would work on tuners that supported the '99s or if it did, it could be with certain serial numbers on the tuners.
I couldn't even remember where to start looking, it's been so long since that was going on and my having that long break before I came back. It sucks getting older.
I would love to able to tune my truck but sense I've been thinking about it the only thing I can think is would it over power a certain part of the drivetrain I know auto manufacturers reserve a little something for the tinkerers and you can free up ponies with exhaust and intake. But I think the computer on autos can make a difference without any other mods but who to trust there are so many and 5star tune may be very capable but cost is a big factor with me. And I've already paid enough on playing with my last truck to last to least five more trucks from now so I have to keep everything on this truck as justified as I can,so no more expensive toys that can't justify themselves. I just use this truck for towing and hauling.i would like a little more torque and if possible a few more mpgs but that's it. To old for playing so I just use my truck for work. Any ideas out there about using my edge tuner I think its a evo. I think I remember where it is and hate not using something when I tow seems like I could use it just need to know how or have it programmed for me
i think the biggest concern with edge products was the fact they tended to not return to stock, and then locked up the computer turning your vehicle into a large brick that has to be towed to the dealer to have the computer reprogrammed.
now whether this was just the older units, or the newer ones still do it, i don't know. i never used one because of all the bad rap they got.
i use DP tuner products for my diesels, and 5-Star tunes on a SCT-X4 for gas engines.
one of the guys here at FTE named Cody is a tuner and likes the edge products, but i would assume he writes tunes for them to make them work properly. but again, i don't know for sure.
