Quick Towing Question

I'm in a bit of a bind, it's a long story but the short version is that towing my bumper pull trailer my Weight Distribution setup went south and the truck stop that the trailer is at wants the trailer off their property by the end of the day today.

My question is what is the max tongue weight you guys would be comfortable towing with out a weight distribution set-up for about 100 miles?

I've got airbags so I'm not worried about the squat, I'm worried about the Ford hitch (which was replaced about 6 years ago).

Thanks,
Howard

Where exactly are you and what happened to the WD hitch? Was it the Hensley Arrow that suffered the failure?

I towed our old 9,500lb TH over 15K miles with the factory hitch and my HA, it's tongue weight was 1420 lbs. I towed our current 11,300lb TT with the same factory hitch and HA for another 10K plus miles and it's got a tongue weight of 1860 lbs. When I swapped up to the Torklift 20K SuperHitch the factory hitch was still good and solid, I gave it to another member here to use on his EX. The factory hitches seem to be able to handle a decent amount of TW, but without a functioning WD setup I would keep the speed on that 100 mile trip on the slow side and on more back roads than highway if possible. What kind of TW are you dealing with?

Thanks for the speedy reply!

Yes, it was with the HA, I snapped one of the strut assemblies during some extreme maneuvering to avoid an accident. I'm sure that I would have been splatter on the road had I not had the Hensley Arrow.

I'm looking at a tongue weight of about 1200 lbs. with no WD hitch. If I recall correctly, the max tongue weight with no WD is just 500 lbs. I've mapped out a driving route that's approximately 75 miles with only surface streets, but with a tongue weight that's at over twice the rating I'm a bit haired.

Where are you located? I have a Hensley that’s not currently in use if you need to borrow it.

Thank you sir, I very much appreciate the offer!

30 minutes ago I got the trailer tucked into my RV storage site. I was able to get more time before they towed it off their property and I even had two hours to spare before the deadline. The folks at Hensley were great at getting me out the spare parts I needed, they are a top notch outfit!

Now it's Beer-30 time!

Very happy to hear that you got it all sorted out. The folks at Hensley have always got any parts that I have needed shipped out right away, even once sending it to our next campground where it arrived just before we did.
