I was going to pick my kids up and ran out of fuel right close to my house. Went and put more fuel in it re primed the system and everything, truck acts like it wants to start but in the end it wont. I am new to diesels and really do not know where to start to fix the issue. I have already checked to see if my fuel pump works and it is still pushing the fuel and I have checked the fuel bulb under the hood and it is getting fuel to it. I have checked the HPOP to make sure oil is inside of it and its towards the top of it so I dont think that is the issue. I have checked the fuse for the fuel bulb heater or whatever its called (was fuse 30 on older trucks). Both my fuel pumps come on I have put roughly 15 gallons in the tank after it ran out. Any more information you need I will do my best to get it to you all thank you in advance.

I never ran mine out until it quit, when it started stumbling I shut it off and put fuel in it. If you ran it out it will take some cranking to get it running.
Mine is a truck, but it should only need fuel, key cycle the pump a few times and it should run.
I do not remember if excursions need the in tank mods. It may be still too low on fuel.
Are you sure it ran out of fuel?
pretty sure it ran out, it was on E I have more fuel to put in it but its pulling fuel from the tank already but I will try to put more in it and see if that helps any
Not to insult your 7.3 knowledge. just eliminating possibilities, but for snitts and giggles did you try unplugging the ICP sensor to rule that out? Oil level full? Also, the fuel bowl heater won't necessarily blow the fuse to cause trouble. It can cause trouble without blowing the fuse. Ive got that t-shirt. Try unplugging it anyway
Yes, tell us how you confirmed it's pulling fuel from the tank and how exactly you primed the system.
If you truly ran out of fuel, then the fuel rails in the heads were almost dry. The only way to get the air out of those rails is to either crank and push it through the injectors, or pull the plugs in the rail and cycle the key so the pump gets fuel up there and it starts coming out of the holes. Even then you'll still have a good bit of air in the rails.
Add at LEAST 3 gallons, the more the better. And if you changed the angle of the vehicle between the time it started running out and when you added fuel it might take more fuel to make it go. Then cycle the pump and listen to it, it'll run about 15-20 seconds every time you turn the key on. If it sounds goofy/unsteady at all there's still air being worked through. Once you get several good sounding pump cycles then try starting it, but trying before it sounds like it has a solid fuel flow is totally pointless. The fuel return line is really close to the pick-up so it'll wind up 'recycling' a lot of foamy fuel, I think this is part of why it takes so long to clear out all the air. And just in case, take a sniff in the filler just to verify that you didn't accidentally put gas instead of diesel into it.
My'02 Ex ran out once, it took so long to re-start I thought for sure something else was wrong. I only had a one gallon jug, and thought it should be enough, nope. I could hear the pump making goofy noises, basically it was pumping foam. I put a couple more gallons in and after cycling the pump SEVERAL times it finally sounded like it was pumping fuel solidly. Then I started cranking and it took quite a bit for it to fire, the starter was slowing down and I thought I'd have to be towed, but it finally started chugging giving me hope. Once it would finally stay running on its own it was still running a little rough and it had no power, could barely rev it up in neutral. After a few minutes idling I started going and the power was still way low. It took several miles before it finally cleared up and ran normal again.
It could have sucked alot of junk from the bottom of the tank and clogged the pickup filters or the fuel bowl filter.
I'd start at the fuel bowl and see whats up.
Does it have a metal tank or plastic?
Also just in case, when I removed my tank the other day, the main fuel line wasn't snapped on all the way and fell off in my hand.
Thats probably what smoked my injectors.
