Changing Ratio, Ford 9"

I am trying to swap a Ford 9" 3.70:1 ratio into my '53 F100. It currently has a 3.25:1 ratio. I pulled the axles out part way, but the old pumpkin hangs up, and I can't remove it. I was able to slip the seal & bearing through the brake backing plate, and get one axle almost out, but on the other axle, the seal seems to have a shoulder, and will not slip through the brake backing plate. It looks like I have to remove the brake line fitting, so the backing plate will move with the axle.

Has anyone run across this before?

The brake backing plate is hung up on an 'O' ring on the axle seal. I disconnected the brake line, and was able to remove the pumpkin. The new differential is 3.70:1, with a True-trac posi. The old differential is a 3.25:1 with a posi, but it looks different than the True-trac. It has these numbers: J9 11 110. Does anyone have any idea about what kind of posi this is?

Are you sure the O ring was on the seal, and not on the bearing itself? I have seen this on some new bearings, which allows you to eliminate the old press-in style seals. Or you can use both to have additional sealing.

If your old differential was stock, then it probably had Ford's Traction-Lock (not Posi, which is a GM trade name) differential, which uses clutch plates with a preload spring.

This is the old unit. I think that it's a Trac-Loc type. It's not OEM. It was installed many years ago. I'll check to see if the 'O' ring is on the bearing.

The 'O' ring is on the bearing. I should have removed it before trying to pull the axle through the backing plate. The old unit is a Detroit Locker, and the new unit is a Tru-trac.

There were some copper washers behind the nuts that hold the carrier to the housing. Can I reuse those?

The old R&P seems to have less backlash, than the new R&P. I set the backlash on the new R&P with a dial indicator to the spec that I have. Maybe due to the new R&P being dry, while the old R&P has oil on it.

That didn't look like a Ford T-L to me.

You need to get new copper washers; the old ones deform to seal around the studs when you torque down the nuts. You could try high-temp Permatex sealant, but the recommendation is to use copper washers.
