backing plate removal

backing plate removal
I'm trying to swap out the backing plates on my 78 f150 with a Ford 9inch rear end. I thought that once I pulled the axle I'd be able to just slide the backing plate off, but the bearing , or maybe just the seal, is in the way. Does anyone know if I am going to have to remove the bearing and if so what tools do I need?

Yes, that's what I thought as well. But it looks like the outer seal is stuck in the brake backing plate and preventing the plate from pulling off. I'm afraid to just start whacking on it because I don't have a new seal to replace the old one. Or should I be replacing the seal anyway?
