I'm talking about a zf five speed manual. Not a newer automatic. Which I assumed would be assumed when referring to my 92 and 95 pick ups.
my 92 with a zf five speed manual could do over 120mph no problem it was so high geared with the 3.55's. Fifth gear was practically useless unless you got a head of steam up and heading for 80mph plus. That's why I was surprised that a 302 with a c6 would be revving 3k at 65mph with 3.55's.

ZF-5 (5 speed manual), C6 (old school 3 speed), E4OD (4 speed auto) were all available in this era. C6 was optional by 1992, with the E4OD being standard if I'm not mistaken. The "newer" automatic E4OD is 30 years old. I was in fact referring to the ZF-5 like you had in mind.
Curiosity killed this cat. A quick google shows a c6 at 1:1 and a zf5 final drive at .77:1. Quite a difference.
with 265/75/16 tires shows 103mph in fifth for my old zf5 with 3:55's
and 89mph with 4.10's both at 3000rpm
a c6 at 1:1 final drive shows 80mph with 3.55 and 69mph with 4.10's. Again at 3000rpm.
Almost. C6 is worse yet because the torque converter does not lock up. ZF5 and E4OD both have overdrive, C6 does not. ZF5 and E4OD don't constantly slip, C6 does.
Two trucks, same tire size, same rear gears, one has a ZF5 in 4th gear (or E4OD auto in 3rd with converter locked, either way is 1:1 with no slippage) and the other has a C6 in 3rd (again, 1:1), the C6 equipped truck will still spin more RPM. It's as if the "clutch" is constantly slipping with these old school non-lockup trans like the C6.
They seem to last well, just not built for running highway at today's speeds is all.
Cool. Thanks for the explanation and clarification. All my trucks have been standards except for my '03 and my '11. Actually need to update my sig as I sold the 03 recently.
Great posts. The data is amazing from you guys! I am leaning into just keeping the C6. Lots to do on this vehicle and this might not be the time to dive into a tranny.
