I hauled several pallets of mulch this weekend and noticed afterwards a couple of my plastic puck covers on the factory 5th wheel hitch prep were missing/mangled, so wanted to ask others what they do to protect these covers when loading/hauling pallets and other materials. I guess I could put down a sheet of plywood to cover them up. Any other suggestions?
I have the 5th Wheel Prep Package too. I'm going to have my bed Line-X'd then install a rubber bed mat on the bed floor. I figure that'll protect the pucks well and prevent any objects from sliding around.
While load/unloading a couch in the bed of my truck a leg of the couch got stuck against one side of the puck rings and folded it up. I was kind of bummed about that. Maybe next time I'll throw a sheet of plywood in the bed beforehand.
I just leave the hitch in the bed 24/7/365, and borrow one of the father-in-laws trailers when I need to pick up a load like that. But that doesn't work for everyone.
I have always tried to use a sheet of plywood. I have an occasion turned the plastic ring up loading or unloading. A heat gun will it to reform the proper way again.
I have line X but not sure the rubber mats will allow pallets to be pushed farther into bed to get the weight over the axle. Not sure if one bad pallet did all the handiwork on the puck covers, or if it was a combination of multiple pallets being loaded and pushed forward

I've had the same issue with the puck covers flying out when a pallet is loaded. I've actually had to purchase new covers because I've lost a few with loads being put into the truck. In my opinion, a bed mat is a no go when loading a pallet. It's too, "sticky" for the pallet to slide into the truck and be centered over the axle.
In the months to come, I'll have 2k pound pallets forklifted into the bed a few times a month. I'll probably just leave the bed mat in & throw a good piece of 1/2 plywood in there. The pallet will slide right in & I won't have to worry about my puck covers like last year.
