Engine replacement at 31,000 miles

My 2017 6.2 crew cab was making an annoying ticking noise at idle. It still had good power and was quiet above idle. The sound seems to be coming from under the drivers side valve cover.
I took it in to get the dealer to check it out. They tore into it and found metal shavings.
31,000 miles and time for a new engine.
I got a smoking deal on this truck when I bought it and had been second guessing my taking the edge off that good deal by purchasing the 100,000 mile bumper to bumper. Glad I’ve got it now.
The dealer gave me the news Friday afternoon and said they had sent the request to ford. I’m assuming at this point that it’ll be approved.

Same thing happened to my 2018 with the 6.2 at 1500 miles. Metal shavings in the oil, i'm starting to think that some of the 6.2's they made are defective as ive had another person tell me the same thing with his plus his dealer had 3 more with the same issue. Ford replaced mine but even the new one has the same issue. My buyback just got approved through bbb auto line arbitration and i will not get another 6.2.

Did you guys find the metal shavings in the oil or did the dealer find them? My changes are done at the dealer and would HOPE they would say something if they found any.

Good point. I also have a dealer change my oil. Mainly because they're cheaper than the fast lube place I used for years and they also rotate the tires, where the fast lube does not. As an added bonus all service is recorded in Ford's computer system if there are any future problems.

Dealer found it when I took it in for a noise complaint in the engine.

My dealer charges 15 bucks if i bring my own stuff.
Sounds like cheap insurance to let them do it and make the discovery if anything were to happen.
Guess out of thousands of units on the road, we only hear of the bad. In this case glad you guys are posting the info!
hope it all works out well for yah.

I usually take mine to the dealer as well (great price for 3 changes) but don't they usuallyempty out the oil in a bulk container?

You guys are putting to much faith in the dealer. For $15 bucks your not getting much attention. I’d say the metal shavings are in the filter. Take filter home and cut it up and look.

It is a double edged sword no doubt. But as the filter is removed the tech should see any metal shavings. Yeah I know depending on his/her integrity right.
But if done at home and shavings found, even if taken to dealer for show and tell will it then turn into a he said/she said thingy. Don't really see any clear cut and dry solution here.

I took it in because of the noise. It had been making the ticking noise for maybe 10,000 miles or longer. It just got progressively louder. I assumed it was a lifter.

I have 3 older trucks with the 6.2. It has been a great motor. Is the 2017 and newer engine different than the old one?

Not that I'm aware of. I believe the HP/torque had been upped a bit but that is it.

I do all my own maintenance. took my 2014 6.2 to a dealer due to necessity and convenience. 5k miles later i found out my drain bolt was cross threaded. 1st oil change i didn't do myself and got burned. I dont trust anyone to work on my stuff but me

This is exactly why I still change my oil. Just way to many incompetents out there these days.

New cam profile and larger valves. I don't see that being a big difference for reliability but maybe.........
I will agree with what's been said, the 6.2 is the most reliable SD motor I have owned and my Ford dealer confirms that.
