I had a 6.2 in my 2015 f250 that put two holes in the block at 56,000 miles with impeccable maintenance. They replaced it but all I got was the remainder of my 60,000 mile warranty.
So after further interrogation...
the mechanic says that the shavings were contained to the top of the engine. Hmmmmmm.....
we shall see I guess..
On a a totally unrelated note, I know of a sweet looking 17’ CCSB 4x4 that might be available soon...White STX with black leather and lariat wheels. It has recently been inspected inside and out and given a clean bill of health by Ford Motor Co. 👍👍
They put the truck on a lift, drain the oil into a rolling funnel tube system and never see the oil. everything is "production" "flat rate". Dont count on the dealer to find a problem!!!!! I worked for a ford dealer for 31 years! Thats why i service my own!!!!!!
I think I’ll look into having the used oil from the next few oil changes lab tested. We used to have that done periodically with heavy equipment. They can give me a better idea of what’s wearing and what kind of particles are in the oil than a visual inspection.
Might be a good idea if some of these engines are prone to grenading. Bummed to read about this.
I have a grand total of 14.2 miles on my truck so far and it seems to be OK. Will get some pictures posted soon, working 7-12s on turnaround right now. Ordered a Fox stabilizer shock and cancelled on the ATS since Stage3 cannot tell me when it might ship. And likely order some Fox 2" shocks as I dont really think I will be thrashing it much offroad to need remote reservoirs.
Well anyway I did not purchase the extended warranties and may regret that but hopefully all will be OK.
Update:
After reassembly if still wasn’t right. Now it’s getting a new engine. I was given a 2019 f250 lariat loaner until mine is fixed. 4 weeks in so far.
well shoot fire....looks like a fumoto valve is in order. This way I can run a UOA sample to blackstone and keep an eye on the used oil during oil changes.
And will have to do my own since no way a dealer will take the time to pull a sample for me.
Sheesh the bar continues to lower in all levels of service life....sigh....
Keep us posted......
My 2017 6.2 crew cab was making an annoying ticking noise at idle. It still had good power and was quiet above idle. The sound seems to be coming from under the drivers side valve cover.
I took it in to get the dealer to check it out. They tore into it and found metal shavings.
31,000 miles and time for a new engine.
I got a smoking deal on this truck when I bought it and had been second guessing my taking the edge off that good deal by purchasing the 100,000 mile bumper to bumper. Glad I’ve got it now.
The dealer gave me the news Friday afternoon and said they had sent the request to ford. I’m assuming at this point that it’ll be approved.
I would think it would fall under the 3-year, 36.000 mile warranty and be replaced no problem. Or the 60,000 drive train warranty.
I do not see a way for it NOT to get approved. Unless they find something you did that caused it.
It’s all covered by warranty. Initially the dealership asked ford for a new engine. Ford said new cams and heads. Three weeks later all the parts finally came and they finished up. It was still “not right”. Now they’re gonna put a new short block under the new heads and cams. Obviously this isn’t my preferred process. I’m past being concerned about the longevity of the engine and whether a hand assembled motor is as good as a robot motor. I really just need it put back together and working. I use it to make my living. They have supplied a loaner but I am lacking the ***** to drop a 1500 mile demo lariat off into the crap that I do my own truck. I drive an STX for a reason and it’s oxford white because the paint is easy to match.
hoping to have mine back in a week.
for what it’s worth, I’m pleased with how my dealership has handled their end. I’m still a ford guy and would prolly buy another 6.2. Of course I’d have to consider a new 7.3 gas.
Yep. Extended warranties are completely worth it for guys like us who intend to drive and work the same truck for a few years. Especially on the trucks these days, with all the tech and expense of parts. Lots of guys in this thread have complained about their dealers - sure makes me even more thankful for my awesome dealer. They're the only ones who touch my truck and they've done a great job. I also pay for full synthetic every 5,000 miles - that's all it's had in it after the break-in oil.
Sorry to hear of the engine troubles but glad it's being taken care of. Like you, I'm keeping my eye on that new 7.3L gasser. I've a few years left on the current rig but dang that new engine looks awesome!
I think the only possible way for Ford to handle this is to immediately put a brand new engine in. Period. Should not even be any discussion. And I would want to personally examine the camshaft and journal bearings. If any metallic particulate was circulating thru the engine (it clearly was) then unless they strip the block completely and do a full chemical wash there is no way they can say without doubt there will be no more metal in passages etc. Nope, on this one I would have to become a massive PITA and get legal counsel to force them to put a new engine in. Besides they need this engine for engineering to properly analyze. I cannot believe there is not a new engine sitting in the bay or on its way.
