Yesterday I removed my cladding (plastic molding) from one side of my Excursion to see if i liked how it looked, I have decided I like it better on the truck than off. Now i am trying to get the adhesive tape off the cladding to put new tape on to reinstall the cladding. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to remove the adhesive from the cladding? I have already tried a heat gun, alcohol and the adhesive remover drill wheel all with very little success. Just looking for some suggestions on how to remove that heavy duty two sided adhesive tape.
I will put in a picture of the side by side comparison in case anybody else is thinking about doing this. I had trouble finding pics of anybody who removed the cladding so i just did it and now i'm in this mess!
It takes a LOT of patience to remove the old tape. Many of us have removed our cladding, and there is a thread in here somewhere about the topic. I used a plastic razor blade, goo gone and lots and lots of elbow grease to remove the tape off my paint. I passed the cladding on to another member, so i don't know what he did to get the tape off that side of the equation.
I swapped my scrapped wheel molding for a new one. I soaked a cotton towel in WD40. Passed the rag over the adhesive until it was soaked. Used a plastic scraper and was able to remove most of it. Used a dual action polisher with mild rubbing compound to remove the very light residue.
I purchased 2 pieces of used cladding for my X that were missing due to the aftermarket fender flares taking the space.
I did exactly what NicMike did, as well. The GooGone, and the plastic razor blade really worked, and took a good few hours for both.
Mine is pulling off in a couple places and i want to put a wrap for my buisnes on the truck so i will be pulling mine off also.
thanks for the info. I'll let you know how it goes.
