When I got my 2000 Excursion v10 a couple years ago, there was a little tick on acceleration I figured was an exhaust leak. It has since gotten worse so I think it's time to fix it. It's not spark plugs, I don't think- i have replaced the plugs and it made no difference. Now the tick is getting louder, fuel economy is going down and the exhaust smells like fuel, so I'm thinking it's a manifold bolt leak on the driver's side.
Anyway, has anyone here used the ebay long tube headers? When I got my truck, all that was available on ebay was the shorties, but now it seems everyone is stocking long tube copies. I searched and found a lot of comments about ebay headers, both positive and negative, but everything seemed to be from a number of years ago and all pointed to the shorties.
if anyone has input good or bad I would appreciate it. "Buy Banks" isn't really the input I'm looking for as it's not an option. Right now my options are having the stock logs machined, buying new logs on ebay, or these headers. Financially, those are my only options.
They are stainless with 14 gauge tubes- the better ones on Summit seem to range from 18 to 14 gauge. The only downside I can see is that the flange is only 1/4" where as the others- Thorley, Banks, Hedman, etc- are 3/8-5/8 flange thickness. Would the thinner flange cause undue warping?
Also, I noticed there are different gaskets out there, from individual port gaskets to split 2/3 gaskets and then the standard one piece gaskets. Any input on which is preferred?
Finally, hardware. I was thinking stainless m8×1.25 35mm flange head bolts with copper washers to prevent stainless/stainless galling with the header expansion against the bolt head. Good idea? Bad idea?
I will be towing heavy, 10-12k this summer, moving from California to Indiana, but otherwise I don't normally tow too heavy. Hoping to get a small TT to travel a bit eventually though.
Search for Manzo headers on ebay. My daughter has a set on her chevy and we're happy with them They are 14 gauge and have a thicker flange than the brand you're looking at. Use Remflex gaskets. I have the Banks headers on my EX and haven't had a leak since installing them. Maybe fix your studs, get some Remflex gaskets, and leave it stock for now.
