Rebuilding Info

t some point I am going to rebuild a 300. I just dismantled a donor engine and was wondering, As a safe guideline, How much can you turn a crankshaft and bore a cylinder.
The block I took apart has a cracked cylinder and has already been bored .030 over and is toast. The crank looks really good and looks to be about .015 under.
I've read about broken piston skirts but this is my first.

I believe that 0.060" over on the bore is the max, and carries some risk. 0.040" is a safer max. I'm not sure about the cranks journals.

In racing circles it is common practice to grind the crank rod journals down to the late small block Chevy size of 2.1000", and even to the early small block Chevy size of 2.000". In extreme cases racers desiring to reduce rotating friction have used Honda rod bearings which I believe are 1.990". Of course grinding the rods that small means a custom rod is needed. Main bearing inserts are commonly available down to .030" undersize.

For cracked or holes that cant be cleaned up with boring they make sleeves but I hear they are not cheap it have installed and machined but check with your machine shop.

Thanks for the replies. The guy who gave me the engine said that his machinist quoted him about $150 to sleeve a cylinder. This engine is already 30 over and the other cylinders are heavily scored and scratched. It's time to retire this block.
