I need to see the side of my trailer. I keep an eye for tire/hub failure. I've had too many blowouts picking up road hazards, or just plain 3rd world ****h ole roads. Been though south Chicago/Joliet on I80 in the last few years?
He's right. These mirrors suck. They don't extend far enough for a 5th wheel on EITHER side, and they are too small.
I too tow a 101 in trailer and have no issues with the OEM Ford mirrors. When turning right one can see the pass side easy. I would not want the mirrors to stand out any further then now. It would be a hazzard on some rural roads and being the mirrors cost over $1300 each I'd pass and not worry about tire issues as you wouldn't see it coming anyway.

Not sure how you have your mirrors setup but there is no problem seeing down the side of the trailer.
Whatching for road debris in front of you is easier than watching the tires while driving. Get TPMS for your trailer tires but they wont help from picking up road debris on the road.

These mirrors work as they're supposed to, how far do you want them sticking out? If they extend out much further you're going to clip oncoming traffic on some of the more narrow roads.

He might need some sort of live cam attached to his trailer pointed at the tires for what he thinks he needs.

I-80 from Minooka to I-57 is horrible. I've seen holes in the Joliet bridge where you can see straight through to the river.
