Mirror Question
Mirror Question
Hello all I have some questions about mirrors. My mirrors on my truck are shot. Once I hit 30 mph the move postions because of the wind. I have the black mirrors now which are'nt really one for the looks. So I was looking throught my LMC truck mag. and found chrome skinnier ones. They say they fit 1980-89 trucks but I would just want to know if anyone has installed them here is a link LMC Truck Parts - Page 69
they are the ones on the top left item number 49-6544 and 6545. I have the 49-6640 ones currently. Thanks

I have those smaller chrome side mirrors (49-6544/6545) on my 1985 F150 Lariat. I don't see those mirrors that much anymore. I think they were more common on the earlier 1980 - 1983 F100 models.
The smaller chrome mirrors were actually the "standard" side mirrors from 1980 - 1986 while the larger, more common "Western swing-lock mirrors" (49-6620/6621) were optional. The "Western" mirrors were much more popular and were used right up until 1996. I used to have a 1988 Bronco II that had those smaller black mirrors (49-6640), but I have never seen those before on an F150. The small chrome mirrors on my F150 are original and still tight and do not move around at highway speeds. I hardly see any trucks with the smaller side mirrors like mine has, which is probably why I like mine better.
Even though the "Western" mirrors are more functional for towing, I always thought they looked kind of silly with that long arm brace that extended down and bolted half way down the door. I personally think the smaller mirrors look much better on a 2wd "sport" truck, or a customized lowered truck like what you have in your signature.

Yeah, the small mirrors were standard, and the larger swing-away mirrors were optional.
The small mirrors are fine for normal driving, but most people really prefer the larger mirrors for towing. The bigger mirrors help to see around a trailer that is wider than the truck, and also make it much easier to where you're going when backing the trailer.
If you never plan to do any towing/hauling, those smaller mirrors are fine. Also, they will not detract from the custom look you have going on.
I've never liked those small mirrors myself, but they should do just fine for normal driving. Cars used the same basic type of mirrors for years, and some only had one on the left side.

My F100 used to have those.

I'd give ya my old ones, but they have the same problem as your black ones, and they're severely pitted.
I'm about 6'3",so by the time I adjusted them to my height,I saw the sky and not behind me.So I upgraded to the swing locks.

if your mirrors are getting knocked out of place due to the wind why not drill out the rivets and replace with a bolt and locknut to tighten everything up?

Neither carry the chrome standard mirrors. NPD does have replacement black paddle style mirrors like the ones already on his truck.
Rock Auto only shows the Swing Locks.
Your best and most likely only bet is LMC.You could try an obsolete parts dealer, but you'll probably have to pay more, since Obsolete dealers usually carry OEM stuff.

Those mirrors look super clean. They look better than the 90-96 mirrors that everyone puts. LMC is about the cheapest you can find. They sell some universal chrome mirrors at autozone but they have more of a chevy look. When I was first looking at the junkyard I noticed the 80s chevy pickups had almost the same mirror but the way you mounted them was different. Click on my cardomain link and you can see what they look like on an f150. I got both for $5 at the junkyard but the driver side had a little piece of glass missing.
I dont mean to jack the thread here but wow you brought that truck a long way since that picture was taken. Kudos.
